Question Can I use a PCIe x4 card in the x16 gfx slot?

    Hi all,

Probably a dumb question. I'm rebuilding my server so getting a mobo with onboard gfx, it'll also be micro-ATX.

Thing is the RAID card I want is PCIe x4 and I was wondering if I can use this in the x16 slot that is on most mobos? It seems to be quite hard to find a micro-ATX board with anything but x1 PCIe slots?

    Cheers in advance

    Paul.

    yes.

big slots will take smaller cards. the reverse is not true.

Cheers I thought that was the case, was just wondering as they always label the primary 16x as the gfx card slot

Re: Can I use a PCIe x4 card in the x16 gfx slot?

If you would rather have it in a x4 slot (not that you need a PCIe grpahics card for a server) then the Gigabyte G33m-DS2R is a mATX board with a x4 PCIe slot

Exactly. The are backwards compatible, and will not have a problem with 4x items. You'll want to check the settings in your BIOS, too.
