    HDD mount vertically

"mounting your harddrives vertically is the stupidest thing you can do. Trust me, they will die on you sooner than the horizontally mounted ones. This is therefore a stupid design." read this comment online... just wondering if there is any truth in it seeing as i might mount my hdd's in the vertical position

    Re: HDD mount vertically

This comes up all the time & the general consensus between people who know what they're talking about is that there's little to no truth in the matter whatsoever. If there was, I doubt that pretty much every disk array on the market would use vertical disks (example below).

    Re: HDD mount vertically

due to the HDD being vertical, the heads have to move against gravity, i think thats what the argument is all about, but seeing as thought the heads have very little mass there would be no effect. maybe a slightly reduced lifespan. (possibly)
even if there was an effect, it would purely be nominal.

go ahead and mount your HDD's vertically

    Re: HDD mount vertically

As far as I know hard drives can be mounted in pretty much any way as long as they are not moved while they're on.

As shown above, a LOT of server hard drives are stored like that.

    Re: HDD mount vertically

its the same when people say, will my 360 break/unreliable when its flat or vertical? answer no, heat is displaced at the back not on the side and thats why the sides get hot as hot air is around it.

Vertical is fine m8, just dont drop it .

    Re: HDD mount vertically

Last thing I read said it causes slightly more wear on the bearing, but it won't cause any major wear. I wouldn't worry about it being vertical. If it was such a problem the manufacturers would give a warning on the hdd manual etc

    Re: HDD mount vertically

No vertical is fine, horizontal is fine, it's when they are at 36.6° to the horizontal whilst upside down that you find most tend to die pretty quickly.
