Re: High CPU temp - 60 degrees at idle

1 thing you must not do while trying to get the heatsink to sit better is wiggle it while your PC is on..
my mate was having problems with his CPU temps so he tried wiggling and pushing the heatsink towards the board and he shorted the motherboard.

Core-Temp should be displaying the correct temperature..
but the BIOS can sometimes be wayyy out!

    good luck

Core temp still seems pretty high what fan you using and at what rpm?
I'm using a 120mm Scythe S-FLEX SFF21F Fan 1600 with the Thermalright Ultra 120 eXtreme. It's It should be a pretty good combo and, I agree, the idle temps are a little high. I'll re-seat the HSF.

Re: High CPU temp - 60 degrees at idle

Just an update on this. I've confirmed that the new BIOS reports the wrong CPU temperature. Regardless, I removed the Ultra 120 eXtreme heatsink and cleaned the AS5 thermal paste using Akasa TIM cleaner. I then reassembled the heatsink in a different orientation to before - vertical instead of horizontal. I also placed the fan on the heatsink such that it was blowing through the heatsink towards the exhaust fan at the back of the Antec P182 case. Previously, the Ultra 120 eXtreme heatsink was affixed horizontally and the fan was below it pulling air downwards. This was probably disrupting the airflow in the case quite significantly. I have no idea why I had assembled it like this!

CoreTemp on a lightly loaded machine gives the following temps (degrees Celsius):

    Core 0: 33
    Core 1: 35
    Core 2: 26
    Core 3: 28

These are much more reasonable temperatures.

Running Prime 95 V25.5 for around 10 minutes produces the following temepratures according to CoreTemp:

    Core 0: 54
    Core 1: 54
    Core 2: 47
    Core 3: 47

Given how closely packed the fins are on the TRUE, I'd say it could quick easily hit it without a constant push of air through. Really it needs a dedicated fan to work, unlike the Ninja and Infinity (though I'd still stick a slow fan on them too).

It's a similar story with the HR-03 - excellent with a fan, and even advertised that they can run passively, but they're very poor at it.

Re: High CPU temp - 60 degrees at idle

    How did you confirm that?[/QUOTE]

    Hi Blitzen,

I found a thread on the Abit USA forums where people were having the same issues with the latest BIOS over-reading the CPU temp (for 65nm cores). I then flashed back to the old BIOS and the temperatures were 'normal'. During both tests I used CoreTemp to compare the readings that the BIOS and uGuru were providing me with. CoreTemp agreed largely with the old BIOS. There is a slight flaw in my assertion because CoreTemp measures the temperatures at each CPU core. The Abit BIOS (and, hence uGuru) measure the temperature at the CPU case (as far as I am aware).

Of course, there is a possibility that CoreTemp could be wrong and the latest BIOS could be right! I'm just going on the tests i've done and the balance of probabilities.

This might be an issue with the Ultra 120 eXtreme in the future. I've only had my system around six months and when I removed the heatsink I noticed a fair bit of dust between the fins which would have impeded airflow. The orientation of the fan on this heatsink means that the fan has to blow at through the fins to remove captured heat.

I used a vacuum cleaner with the the crevice tool to get rid of the dust, before reseating the heatsink. It's something that i'll keep an eye on but the gaps between the fins are very, very narrow and I suspect will required cleaning (i.e. removal of dust) every few months.

Re: High CPU temp - 60 degrees at idle

"Current" Athlons are those which you could credibly compare to a C2D, i.e. recent tech, not stuff that's 3 years old and less than a third as powerful.

Hi stoner. I've turned the fans in my Antec P182 to their lowest speeds so the system is very quiet indeed. The drawback of this is that the system temperature tends to be slightly higher than normal. I can achieve lower temperatures by turning the case fans to the medium or high settings but this makes the system too loud for my liking.

They're not full load temps. The time stamp on the image is exactly the same as the time that Prime95 was started (3:23). You need to Prime for a while before you reach max load temps, not just start it and then immediately take a screenshot - thats just basically idle temps.
