Hmmm... Depends on what you want really... For most things I'd say that it doesn't make much difference. AMD (for socket A at least) has a very clear price advantage. At the highest end I believe a highly overclocked P4 can out-pace a highly overclocked XP but you are talking about serious money to get there. On the old 'bang for buck' ratio an nForce 2 mobo + an overclocked 2500+ (barton - 512K L2 cache) are pretty hard to beat. If you rely on a particular application and that application either happens to run much faster on one platform than the other or is optimised to do so then I reckon you could just about justify one over the other... I'd be tempted to go P4 if I had the cash - mostly down to all the nice features you get with a Canterwood or Springdale mobo... But I'm all socket A here (well apart from my laptop but I didn't build that!).

One important point though - do you care about the system becoming very obsolete very quickly? Socket 478 and Socket A won't be around forever... Neither will AGP... And even short term prices should go down soon (end of the month?)... I know this always happens in the PC world but IMO it's going to be worse than normal this year.

    Just my 2p!

I know there was a "use the search" smiley about here somewhere...(jk)

to answer your question, the p4 is a bit more beneficial for memory intensive tasks(i believe) though i doubt you would notice the difference. Amd seems to do mariganlly better on most games.

It should be noted though that the difference between the 2 is negligable and i'd go for whatever you find cheap.

Intel = faster clock speeds, apparently cooler chips and smaller chips

AMD = more clock cycles per megahurt, cheaper chips, better architecture

This is just based on chit chat not actual for definite fact.

AMD chips are far better, there clock speed arent as fast but...can be overclocked easily. They are also cheaper and keep lower temps.

Well my first instinct was to tell you to stop being lazy and go do some window shopping but as I've been bored this morning:

£800 including VAT for the base unit alone? Monitor + mouse + keyboard extra...

Well... if it's mostly games then I'd advice on a good GFX card, CPU, mobo and RAM... You can't really future proof it - not ever but especially at the moment as there's lots of new things coming this year:

AGP replaced by PCI express (16x)
PCI replaced by PCI express (1x)
    DDR replaced by DDR2
Socket A (XPs) replaced by socket 939/754 (Athlon 64s)
Socket 478 (P4) replaced by socket T (later Prescott P4s and Tejas)
ATX replaced by BTX (case and PSU)
PATA IDE phased out (will we finally start to see SATA optical drives?)

Not saying all of it will happen this year - some of it might stretch to next year - but a lot of it will...

£800 buys a good base unit though:

    Common components:

    Case + PSU:

    (Black) Antec Sonata - £88.07 including 380W PSU @ overclockers.co.uk

    Optical drive:

    Nec 8x DVD Dual R/RW IDE BLACK Burner - £88.86 @ ebuyer.com

    FDD (if you need one!):

    Black one obviously (alps) - £5.01 @ ebuyer.com

    HDD:

    200GB 7,200 RPM SATA WD JD (8MB cache) - £116.52 @ ebuyer.com

    RAM:

    1GB PC3200 (2 x TwinMOS 512MB PC3200) - £108.10 @ komplett.co.uk

    GFX:

ATI Radeon 9800SE AIW 128MB DDR AGP (good features, good performance and a good chance it will softmod for excellent performance) - £129.99 @ lowestonweb.com

Base system (no CPU, mobo or HSF): £536.55

    P4 system:

    Intel Pentium 4 2.4ghz 800FSB SKT478 512kb Cache Retail Box (should overclock to 12 x 250 - 3GHz and will probably go on to higher speeds) - £127.29 @ ebuyer.com
    P4C800-E Deluxe SKT478 I875 ATX Sound Gig LAN USB 2.0 FSB800 Retail Box - £126.96 @ ebuyer.com

    XP system:

    A7N8X-E Deluxe SKTA NVNorce2ST ATX 8xAGP Giga LAN, SATA, Firewire, 6 channel Audio, USB2 Dual chan. DDR +WiFi slot (up to DDR400) - £82.17 @ ebuyer.com
    AMD ATHLON XP2500+ 333MHZ FSB 512 L2 Cache Barton CPU - OEM - £62.98 @ ebuyer.com (should overclock to 3200+ speeds and probably higher)
Zalman CNPS 7000A-CU Flower Cooler - £36.42 @ tekheads.co.uk (you could certainly get away with a cheaper HSF but this is supposed to be very good and still very quiet (in keeping with the sonata case)

    P4 total: £254.25 + £536.55 = £790.80
    XP total: £181.57 + £536.55 = £718.12

Only £72.68 difference if you use an OEM XP 2500+ and the Zalman HSF *BUT* if you switched the OEM 2500+ for a retail one (£64.28 @ ebuyer.com) the difference between the P4 and XP setup would be £107.80... Which would be enough to swap the 128MB 9800 SE AIW for a 256MB 9800 Pro (not an 9800 Pro AIW though)...
