    Urgent Security Question

    Hi guys and girls,
ive just had my email address hacked and when i looked at it i have an email saying some one has transfered 171 quid to NORWAY!!! anyway ive contacted the bank etc but was just wondering how theyve hacked my hotmail password and accounts (internet banking). one of the worst things is on the email from western union it has my actual home address at the bottom so they know where i fricking live!

anyway i was just wondering what is the best sort of anti virus or protection i could have on my pc and wheres a good place to buy it from. i heard the MOD use kaspersky, that must mean its good....right.

im not to found of norton as it seems to slow computer quite drastically.

    any replies would be great

    thanks

    Re: Urgent Security Question

    I use Kaspersky.. It's perfect.

Light on resources, takes care of everyting.

Spend 10 minutes setting it up when you first install it and then leave it to it's own devices

    Re: Urgent Security Question

How strong was your hotmail password? - it may have been cracked with a dictionary attack. Have you used the same password in other places? Passwords are often (I don't know about hotmail specifically) sent in clear across the net, so any packet sniffer could detect them.

It is possible that the password was obtained from your computer (do you use a wireless network? Is it protected?)

It could have been obtained by malware - Nod 32 is highly regarded by many on Hexus. You should also consider some form of spyware detection and removal.

You should also be circumspect about opening e mail from unknown sources, and some websites (particulary hacker or warez sites can be a source of malware.

cheap as chips here and for 3 licences

Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK

get internet security so everything is protected

if you only want single user its £11 here

NOD32 probably is the best AV software but Kaspersky Net security is the best all in one imo.

    Re: Urgent Security Question

Frankly I doubt that this is down to the AV software specifically. I also don't think (from your post) that there is any evidence that anyone has hacked your email account. Why would they send you an email saying that you've just spent the money, when it would be easier to use a false email?

Anyway the best protections you can have are to use your brain and have a hardware firewall.

I never delete any email in my hotmail account and when i logged in it said DELETED 1
so when i had a look at it it was the western union email.

the only messages that delete themselves are the junk ones and they dont end up in the deleted folder, and i hadnt deleted it.

NOD32 is great, but £23 a year iirc, so more expensive than Kaspersky. I have NOD32 and I love it though

So they got your bank account details, your address and your hotmail details? Sounds like either you've been phished or someone has hacked into your PC.

I would immediately use one of the online AV sites and do a complete scan, e.g. Trend Micro HouseCall - Free Online Virus and Spyware Scan - Trend Micro UK

Also it's worth checking what your firewall is letting through at https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2

Also you do have Windows configured securely, right?

Hmm...phishing would be my guess...well, if you have really been hacked, sorry for you mate, but in this day and age you need to use some common sense and NOD32 :d...hope its just a hoax mail thingy...btw Western Union people can trace the transfer IMO, you can always ask for records, they always send money on ID and the receiver of the money also has to show some ID etc..maybe they can help you out..let us know

    Re: Urgent Security Question

I'm surprised that this hasn't hit the news yet but several large internet stores have had their security compromised and potentially thousands of customers have had their banking/credit card details stolen.

My dad had his Barclaycard details nicked and they even managed to ring Barclaycard and change his address details and start using the card. He only found out when he was in a DIY store and the details were questioned. Took 25 mins to sort out. He then went through his statement with Barclaycard who told him that there had been a compromise from a number of internet sites but they weren't allowed to tell him which. On reading between the lines and questioning the operator it turned out to be digitaldirect.co.uk that had been compromised.

So I'd advise everyone to start checking their banking asap because not only did they have the address but also telephone number, password etc etc. Completely compromised.

edit to add. Looks like others have had similar problems. DIGITALDIRECT - A warning!! - MoneySavingExpert.com Forums
