Which Dual Core?
Hi guys, I need a suggestion for a good dual core, for my close friend. It doesn't need to be too powerful, no gaming, mainly surfing, emails, MS office, music & videos. Should be solid for at least couple of years? without her having to upgrade. No need to overclock at the moment, but the possibility to do so later would be nice.
at the moment i been looking at a:- Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 S775 2.66ghz 4mb Cache 1333FSB

Bit more expensive but 45nm so uses less power than the chip you picked which is out dated now really

And if you have £138 to spend get a Q6600 quad corethat'll last you more than 2 years for pretty much anything.

the quad sounds good, i think better to go for go for that now i think bout it.
Yeah theres the E7200 as well which is an odd one.
2.5GHz but it's 1066MHz which would clock (if you were) quite well I would think.
Around £90 on pre-order but I would get the pentium dual core and save £40 rather than that one.
In fact if i'm honest I would only get the pentium dual core or the Q6600 lol
Look on today only if you are ordering this weekend, all the intel processors are on there...

ahh there is some pretty nice deals on today only, unfortunately can't grab the parts right now, this is just a lil plan head. thanks though guys.

Just go for a <£50 E2160/80.
I didn't say she would be gaming but if you've got the budget and you want your PC to last a long time (4 years easily if you're not gaming) the q6600 makes a lot of sense.
Of course the dual core is plenty enough though which is why i recommended it.
yea, i mean at first i wasn't looking at really anything over 2.2-ish ghz dual core for her, but she won't mind with the budget if i can suggest something that will just keep it going hassle free for her a few years. so yea i agree with ya, gettin a quad would cover it.plus later on she might start using the capabilities abit more, if they are there to be used.
I'd go cheap personally too. Like the E2160 that was mentioned above. I have a crappy old P4 (single core) that is ideal for emails, MSword, surfing, movies, mp3's etc.. so an E2160 would be fine.
The few years shouldn't really matter either because nothing will change. You could wait 10 years and it will still be performing equally good. The only way it would ever be a problem in the future, is if she changed her requirements. And it would probably be best to just upgrade if that ever happens, rather than upgrade now just in case it happens.
She is never going to use a quad core if all she does is surf the web, emails, MSWord and music etc. If you think she may start using photoshop or cakewalk or something, then go ahead with something like the Q6600. Otherwise, I would spend the cash you save on something nice. Like better speakers, or a better keyboard or screen or more disk space to store more mp3's or whatever.
Sorry Mike but it doesnt in this case.the q6600 makes a lot of sense.
The Q6600 is total overkill for what this build is for.
THe money saved by going E2160/80 could be used elsewhere.
And the original point of throwing it into the mix was he was looking at the expensive dual core options to which I suggested the options of
The cheap Dual Core or the Quad core.. which does make more sense than the E8***'s .. even you would agree with that I'm sure.
I don't know what she likes to do beyond the obvious. Maybe she'll want to rip DVD's to an portable media player.. quads are useful for that (my 2.2 takes over 4 hours).. maybe she won't have the money in 4 years to upgrade and then she'll think damn.. wish I had a better PC lol I dunno.. but it is an option and it might be worthwhile.. it's not for me to decide.
Another vote for cheap as chips. The 21** processors will overclock to 3ghz quite easily if needed for £50. Iirc Hexus did an article a while back. In 4 years time you won't be able to give away a Q6600
HSK - if you can find out more about what she wants to do with the machine and her budget then you'll get a well informed build that will last many years.

I have an E2180, coming from a P4630 and it's is really quick. Even at the stock 2GHZ i noticed a difference at 3Ghz the system feels like it flys.

I have done a fair few builds for people using that and the E2160 and the performance, for such a cheap chip is second to none.
THe cash saved can go on a half decent cooler (£25 should do it) and it will clock great.
