Re: New system for a gamer.
I like it accept for that case and PSU.
You can't use a full size ATX motherboard in a uATX case.
Re: New system for a gamer.
i'd definately get a better case and a branded power supply, but other than that, it's spot on..
maybe get a cheap case.. but definately get a branded power supply with all that expensive gear.
Re: New system for a gamer.
ah didnt check the case size was only looking at the fact it had a built in psu.
What size PSU do ya reckon would be needed for that spec?
Re: New system for a gamer.
Re: New system for a gamer.
OCZ StealthXStream 500w Silent ATX2 Power Supply look ok?
Re: New system for a gamer.
Nice 500W would be plenty.
Are you after a small case or don't you mind?
Full ATX a good combo is the antec sonata plus :)
Re: New system for a gamer.
He doesnt really care about the case. Its more just about getting a cheap one so can pay more on the other parts.

you kinda need a decent case to be able to use the more high-end parts because they generate a lot more heat so you need a good airflow case to be able to remove all that heat.
Re: New system for a gamer.
Aye but You can still get ok cases for air flow for about 40-50.
My main rig is in a lian li pc70 case dont really wanna spend that type of cash on a cash ;)
Is the sonata III ok?

Sonata III is very good.. and the PSU in that case is also very nice!
would be a good buy if you went for it tbh.

Nothing wrong with the Sonata III, I have just put together a new machine using it and had no problems. Only using stock coolers etc but it is still a nice quiet system
The only minor thing I would say made the install awkward was the lack of a removable motherboard tray but it is still easy to work with, just make sure you got some cable-ties to tidy up the PSU cables as it isn't a modular one
Re: New system for a gamer.
Hey guys.
Forgot about OS.
What will be best to run on the above setup
win xp , vista 32bit or vista 64 bit
cheers
Re: New system for a gamer.
Definitely not Vista32, which suffers from the same memory limitations as XP32, but gobbles more of the available RAM. Vista64 would be my recommendation as you get full use of the 4Gb, however it will cost you a few FPS in some games.
Re: New system for a gamer.
I'd go with xp. Hassle free.
Re: New system for a gamer.
XP is a waste of cash now though, a year ago maybe but now its just pointless to put cash into it.
Re: New system for a gamer.
go for the xp, vista still has loads of driver issues especially the 64 bit version

That's just not true. For most users there won't be any problems with drivers in Vista64.
Of course it's always worth checking if some specific piece of hardware or software is necessary to your use, e.g. serious musos have a lot of problems. But if you have a decent new PC with 4Gb+ RAM you will likely be better off with Vista64.
Re: New system for a gamer.
I've had good expereinces with vista 64bit so far but I prefer windows 32bit still.

the thread does say for a gamer, and looks like most gamers that use vista 64 still report a lot of driver problems even in recent games and especially problems with nvidia drivers, but i do agree that if you want to utilize your system ram you should use a 64 bit os and i'm not against vista, i have a dvd myself, but after using it for a week reverted to xp - IT'S JUST LESS HASSLE, i'll wait another half a year till everything falls into pieces :)
Re: New system for a gamer.
Can't say I've had any problems playing games, but then I rarely do. Can't say I've ever had an issue with NVidia drivers either, which is why I prefer them to ATI with whom I had several. I know there are problems though.
If you go to any games community forum and you will see legions of people having problems, whether they use Vista or no. But obviously Vista, and 64bit operation, add another opportunity for things to go wrong.
