    First comp build.

Hi all, new here. I've been thinking of building a PC since October but only now can I afford it, I'm pretty computer savvy but I don't know a lot about hardware, I've looked at a few "2008" computer builds and this is what I've got so far, can someone check if it's all compatible?

    Motherboard: ASRock Penryn1600SLI-110dB nVidia 650i (Socket 775) SLI 1600FSB DDR2 PCI-E ATX Motherboard - £59.93 including VAT
    CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 G0 SLACR, Kentsfield Core, Socket 775, 2.40 GHz 1066MHz 8MB Cache, Retail - £143.10 Inc VAT
    Graphics: 512MB EVGA 8800GT SSC, PCI-E 2.0, Mem 2000MHz, GDDR3, GPU 700MHz, Stream 112, 2x DL DVI-I - £198.03 Inc VAT(A little expensive but the best 8800GT I've seen, I plan on getting another for SLI in a few months)
    Memory: 4GB (2x2GB) CorsairXMS2, DDR2 PC2-6400 (800MHz), Unbuffered, , DHX Technology 4-4-4-12 - £70.08 Inc VAT
Hard Drive: 400 GB Western Digital - £54.04 Inc VAT
    CD/DVD Drive: LiteOn LH-20A1L-14C 20x DVD±R, 8x DVD±DL, DVD + RW x8/-RW x6, DVD-RAM x12, SATA, Retail, Lightscribe - £22.58 Inc VAT
    Case: Antec 900 - £76.36 Inc VAT
PSU: 750W TX Corsair PSU, single 12V rail, energy efficient, quiet & cool, fully compatible,5 yr warranty - £93.87 Inc VAT

Total cost - £717.99 with VAT.

The Motherboard has onboard sound so I don't need a sound card at the minute.

Also, this is my first computer build, is there anything I'm missing? (I don't plan to overclock anything)

    Re: First comp build.

Don't get that motherboard, get on one with a newer chipset.
CPU is fine, but if you are not overclocking, consider the Q9300
Don't get that graphics card, you can get a 9800GTX for £1 more
    Ram is fine
Hard drive is expensive, but fine, you can get 500GB for £49 now
    Case fine
    PSU fine
Look in the bargains forum for the good deals

    Re: First comp build.

motherboard: not so sure but i dont recall asrock being the high end motherboard manufacturer, might of changed now though. Is sli a must? abit p35 is good
CPU: Looks good, worthy overclocker too
Graphics: please dont buy that card because @ £200 its a joke, buy an 9800GTX if you going too spend that much, look at bfg as they have a good 10 year warranty.
Memory: looks fine, corsair you cant go wrong with imo
Hard drive: WD are great, told the aaks model's are quiet but alot of people praise samsung(they are good now), worth having a look at them
Dvd Drive: liteon are good and always have been but @ £22 its not worth it, LG/samsung are good makes too go with, look on today only as they have a few @ £16, got my samsung for £13
Case: cant go wrong with the 900, but too cut cost you could look at the coolermaster 690
PSU: not sure on that one, single rail used too be great but im thinking dual is best but corsair psu are good. A 620w corsair should do you fine.

edit: rofl sim posted before me

    Re: First comp build.

So if I change the graphics card to a
    512MB BFG Tech 9800 GTX, PCI-E 2.0, Mem 2200MHz, GDDR3, GPU 675MHz, Stream 128, 2x DL DVI/HDTV

    And the motherboard to
    Abit IP35V, iP35 Express, S 775, PCI-E (x16), DDR2 1066/667/800 MHz, SATA II, ATX

    Will they both work together?

EDIT: and change the PSU to: 620W Corsair HX Series Modular SLi PSU, ATX, EPS 12V, whisper quiet, 5 year warranty

Ok. I was thinking about getting another card in a few months but I suppose I won't need it.

EDIT: Will this do? Abit IP-35, Dark Raider, iP35 Express, S 775, PCI-E (x16), DDR2 533/667/800, SATA II, SATA RAID, ATX

yeh get the darkraider, and the corsair hx620w is a great psu, nice and quiet too, and modular so you can improve airflow somewhat.

    Re: First comp build.

I'd agree with some of the previous comments:

Corsair HX620W PSU is very, very good.
I would get an Abit IP-35 series motherboard (there are a range of them at different price points).

Perhaps you should also budget for an OEM version of Windows XP or Windows Vista? With 4GB of RAM you may want to consider Vista.

Also, fans for the case (if the Antec 900 doesn't come with any) and perhaps an aftermarket heatsink and fan for the CPU if you plan to overclock it (and some thermal paste)?

I already have a few Windows cds from previous computers(64bit vista, and 2 32bit xp cds) so I don't plan on buying any more.

Unless they have retail licenses, and you have stopped using them on other computers, you are not legally allowed to use the same license again.

i thought u could legally use it again but the only thing that could cause problems is the key that it generates from the components, microsoft say that if you replace say the motherboard it will void it but if you replace it you need to ring up and get it re activated, try it but if it doesnt work you may need a new one.

I was actually planning on putting Arch Linux on my laptop and Windows on my desktop, I'm not really fussed if I need to put Arch on the desktop at the minute, I won't be able to afford anything else until next month.

if your motherboard dies then you can phoneup mr gates and ask for a new key. But it's still only meant to be used on the one pc.
Only retail keys are allowed to be transferred (but only on 1 pc at a time), oem is for only 1 pc and that's it
