    a hard drive question.....

    hi

    this is probably going to be a really stupid question, but can i use 2 500 gig hdd's from different manufacturters in a raid formation?

    not sure what raid mind you, but a general raid/hdd q.

    i have a 500 gig samsung at present.

    Yes, although it's not really recommended as the entire RAID will only perform as well as the slowest HDD.

    Striped, I'd personally use identical, mirrored, you could probably get away with different drives.

    Yes, safest option - and if you are planning to use RAID1, gopod that you are getting drives mfrd at different times. Although unlikely, it has been known for a batch of drives to have a fault meaning that they all failed at about the same time - not good in RAID 1 - particularly if you don't notice when one has failed and the other fails shortly after. Of course it doesn't matter so much in RAID 0 - if one drive fails, you have lost the data anyway.
