    Urgent Help Please

I finished building my new pc today so when i start it up for the first time i did all the standard stuff like installing drivers and when i went to update the bios with Asus Flash it said it failed. So now when the pc is turned on it starts loading for a few seconds then just powers down, it repeats this automatically unless you turn off the power :S any ideas how to get it back up and running? many thanks.

    Re: Urgent Help Please

You'll have to look at putting your motherboard cd in and try booting from that which should recover the bios, can you get into the bios? I had this problem the other week but i manage to delete my bios and i had to RMA the mobo. Also clear the cmos jumper.

    Re: Urgent Help Please

Take out the battery on the mobo for a few mins and you might have a jumper next to it. Read the manual as it tells you how to re-set the cmos. Just a matter of changing the jumper etc. Should work fine then.

    Re: Urgent Help Please

Well it sounds like the same thing i did with mine and there was no fix. It just kept restarting etc. Just check you mobo manual for bios flash failing to see what it says. To
be honest it looks like a replacements needed.

    Re: Urgent Help Please

Did you update the bios from within Windows or use the floppy disk based flashing utility?

Flashing the BIOS is probably the riskiest thing you can do with the computer - if it goes wrong it just bricks the mobo. The Windows flash utility has a bit of a reputation for being unreliable - the DOS based one is much much safer - although that is of little consolation now. The second mistake was powering down the computer after a faiiled flash - trying again might have been successful. (The BIOS is only read at boot time) - and it is easy to be wise after the event!

Clearing the CMOS might help - you have nothing to lose by trying it. You could try booting from a floppy with the ASUS flash utility on it, but if the machine isn't even getting to POST, then that is unlikely to work. If that is the case, the only remedy is to return the board for repair.

You might be able to get it replaced under warranty on the grounds that the utility failed - but it is only a might and could rely on the goodwill of the supplier.

    Re: Urgent Help Please

If the EEPROM is removeable, you may be able to get it reflashed - you won't have damaged it - just corrupted it.

A quick Google search found this

bios-repair.co.uk | Flash BIOS Repair | Flash BIOS Replacement

    The relevant page is

bios-repair.co.uk | BIOS Repair, BIOS Replacement

Not used them myself, don't know how good they are, but might be worth a look.

    Good luck

    Re: Urgent Help Please

This is why I, and I know many others, don't use Windows "flash" utilities. Sure it *could* happen even in the bootup versions, but I've never seen it.

    Re: Urgent Help Please

If it is a EEPROM i may not be removable from the board
but it does mean you can reflash it.

the only thing that mite stop this is if you completly trashed it when you rebooted when it failed.

if you cannot do it now then the only thing you can do is what Peterb said

but dont hold much hope on a replacement as they always state that upgrading BIOS firmware will invalidate your warrenty if not carryed out by none certified engineer.

    Good Luck

    Re: Urgent Help Please

    Welcome to Hexus San_Guy!

The OP has said that the BIOS EEptrom is removeable. A bad flash is unlikely to have damaged the chip - just corrupted it, and there are some links to a re-flashing service, so with a bit of luck (and we all need that now and again ) he should be able to get it fixed!

Email ASUS, they may be kind enough to send you a new preflashed BIOS chip or at least take your one and reflash it for you.
