    Help with Quiet First Build?

Hi, within the next week I'm hoping to build my first PC... one of the main requirements is for it to be as quiet as possible (without watercooling), if it's noisy it'll probably end up not getting used, I have problems with noises .

I know very little about hardware only what I've read recently and I'm hoping for components that aren't going to be too hard to put together. I have a budget of £850 max, at the moment in the shopping cart:

    Antec P182 - £92
    Corsair HX520W - £63
    -
    Intel Q6600 G0 Retail - £135
Scythe Ninja Plus Rev.B CPU Cooler - £30
    -
    OCUK 8800GTS Extreme 512MB - £140
    Arctic Cooling Accelero AC-S1 - £15
    -
    Asus P5K-E/WiFi-AP P35 - £85
    OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-6400C5 Dual Channel DDR2 - £55
    500 GB Western Digital WD5000AAKS x 2 - £112
    Samsung SH-S203D/BEBN SATA DVD±RW - £17
    -----
    Total: ~£744

Ideally I'd like to run the processor at 3.0-3.2GHz would I be able to do that without much extra noise? I'm also unsure on other bits:

Should I go for the Q9300 instead, will that run cooler and allow quieter cooling? (£170)
Is the Arctic Cooling Accelero AC-S1 any good, or should I go for something like the HR-03GT (£30), I've read quite a few people saying the Accelero is hard to fit and pretty unstable but others say it's great.

So basically I'm after any ways I could potentially make it quieter (swap the stock P182 fans out with 'Nexus Real Silent 120mm'?), If anyone could answer any of the questions, suggest a better setup, or bits I might be missing I'd appreciated it! Thanks, Sam.

Re: Help with Quiet First Build?

I have an S1 for sale with turbo module, used for about a month on my 7900gs and it was not only silent but dropped the temps really low down. Allowed for great OCing, pretty easy to fit tbh, hardest part are the clips, these can be slightly fiddly.

Anyway hope that helps, let me know if you are interested in it thanks

I run silent PC's and the thing you probably don't want to do is to have 2 x Hard Drives, just buy 1 x 1TB HD and partition it.

I'd get Samsung Spinpoints too and suspend them.

I'd also get a Zalman GPU cooler for the card as Acceleros are good but they don't have the same silence that Zalman do.

Also, get some 5v molex coverters off EBay to make the fans silent.

Re: Help with Quiet First Build?

For the harddrive, I would recommend going for the WD 1TB GP harddrive which is significantly more quiet and cooler than other 3.5" harddrives.

And especially with Antec P180/182's pull configuration you have to set the lower fan to medium-high setting in order to prevent the harddrives from overheating.

Also with the P180/P182, case-fan is not very much of a problem, however the noise from CPU fan can get out of the case very easily. Blocking the top hole helps a bit though.

Cooling in a P180 case is sub-par so don't expect very good overclocking unless you can handle the noise. (I have a Pentium D @ 4Ghz + Zalman CNPS9500-AT at 76'C full load in the P180)

Personally I've found my P180 very good at blocking vibrational (i.e. resonance) noise but NOT fan noise.

Also, get some 5v molex coverters off EBay to make the fans silent.
I used my Yate Loon fan connected to the motherboard with the 3pin header so I could control the speed through windows, no need for 5V adapter really.

I'd get Samsung Spinpoints too and suspend them.
P180/P182 comes with rubber mount.. The cage is already suspended (depends on your definition though).

I'd also get a Zalman GPU cooler for the card as Acceleros are good but they don't have the same silence that Zalman do.
Depends on your CPU cooler, with the Scythe Ninja there will be insufficient airflow around the GPU which will overheat the card

Perhaps, but this is why the upper HDD cage can have one fan in front and one behind it to supply the gfx card will fresh air.

I run a passive graphics card in my P182 with no extra airflow and it operates perfectly. No it's settled it in runs under 40 degree's idle and never over 55 under load, it is an 8500GT though lol

a 8500GT is probably fine. I have my Yate Loon set to quite low, and with the air filter (London is hell dusty :S) If I leave it running for 2 weeks, the dust on the filter blocks it so much it doesn't suck much air in. If you whack the speed up then its not silent anymore.

I have an IDE drive in the upper cage as it won't fit in the lower cage with a modular PSU :S

I seems to recall there is a side-mounted fan kit for P180/P182, not sure if it exist anymore though.

if u dont want a loud pc then switch from fans to solid state ionic fans, they are totally silent and outperform conventual fans the same size

I really wouldn't try using those inside a computer. Imagine ionized air form a conductive pathway between your PSU and <insert computer part here>, or it just simply interfere with stuff like memory and CPU.

we obviously won't know for sure until the actual product is ready and they still have the time to come with ideas, maybe of course it will never see the light of day, but if... imagine solid state fans, ssd, gpu cooled by the same technology, could make myself the queitest media pc
