Overclocking a Q6600

i have that exact ram at 2.1v, i think im right in saying thats the manufacturers recomended voltage. having said that you should have no probs running it at 2.0v if youre more comfortable like that (unless you plan to overclock it) actually even 1.9 should be ok tbf, just not the default 1.8!

Yeah Default works, I run mine on 2.4GHZ stock all else for about a month no problems.

But for OC'ng you need more

Update: changed memory voltage to 2.0V, but it didn't like that (Windows froze up just after it has loaded itself) so I set it back to auto and it is now fine again.

Still no luck adjusting the FSB Still keeps freezing before Windows boots.

You've got a nvidia board.. just unlink the FSB's and play with the RAM and CPU independently

It is unlinked, I manually set them to a 1:1 ratio.

Right now it's at 1156(FSB)/578(RAM). It automatically quadruples the FSB.

Interestingly, I set my RAM at 800 (stock speed) and my FSB is at 1156 (2.6GHz) and Windows has loaded... I'll go and poke around in the BIOS a bit more.

Well, I tried 1200 for the FSB and 800 for the RAM and it didn't work, as usual, so I thought, screw it and whacked it up to 1333 and for some reason Windows loaded

I read somewhere that there was a dead patch for someone else where Windows just refused to load but once you got past it, it was fine again. It appears I am past the "dead patch".

Gotta test for stability now

I'm just very relieved that I could get past 2.6GHz lol, I was getting worried that I wouldn't be able to OC it much.

My final question is: what's the highest temperature (under 100% load) that I shuold be trying to keep below? I.e. when do I start going from swish processor to a fried lunch?

Hmm i think for temps, in my bios i've set the alarm to go off at 60*c - but obviously the individual cores will be higher. wouldn't wanna go over that...(not even 55, i think that is a good safe limit) - but i think as long as the HSF is on properly, it shouldnt even reach that.

Hardware Monitor is howing ~70*C per core and my nVidia thing is showing 66*C for the CPU.

Is that too much?

EDIT: dropped down to ~60*C.

hmm i think this is getting high - it probably will function fine, but im not totally sure on the actual recommended temperature limits on the CPU, but it's better not to take the risk incase you knacker it in the long run if it keeps reaching high temps.
