Question Seasonic S12-380W (Silent 12cm Fan Series)

    Hello,

Do you think this Seasonic S12 380W 'Super high efficiency' PSU (which must be 2-3 years old now but running very nicely in my current system) would be sufficient to power my new build?

Q6600 or Q6700 (depending on how much the price is cut by after April 20th)
    Abit IP-35 Dark Raider
    2 x 2Gb DDR2
    One HD - Samsung Spinpoint F1 1TB
    512MB BFG Tech 8800GTS OC
    Hauppuage TV card
Four 12cm case fans + CPU fan
    One CDRW/DVDRW drive

    I'm not looking to overclock.

I've tried a few PSU calculators and entered similar components and it seems it should be ok..

Also am I right in thinking it should be fine since the Seasonics are 'tested and approved to be among the most high-efficient power units in the world'?

I'd like to keep it as obviously it saves ~£60 and it's pretty much silent and still feels new.

    Thanks

I don't think it is enough. Its better not to risk it anyway. PSU power degrades over time I think, so its not actually outputting 380W any more anyway.

In a word no,you'll be pushing it with that 380w. I could be wrong but i sure i'm not, its 2-3 years old for starters, have a look at the corsair range of power supply`s there good stuff.

    Thanks SiM and burtie

That's cool, I'll keep it where it is as a spare machine or something.

I've done a bit of reseach already. I think I'll go with the Enermax Liberty 500W..

    Ooo really ?

Thanks for that, I'll continue with the search

Edit. Yep, I was looking at the one recommended highly by Blitzen (525W Enermax MODU82) but then I couldn't find it again and mistakenly thought it was the 500W Liberty!

    Good spot

Re: Seasonic S12-380W (Silent 12cm Fan Series)

How much are you willing to spend on this?
Corsair VX 550W (£50 non-modular) or HX 520W (£60 modular) are generally recommended by everyone.

Re: Seasonic S12-380W (Silent 12cm Fan Series)

    Was thinking around £60.

The HX520W looks great. 'Whisper quiet' and a fair bit cheaper too.

    Thanks

My 500W Liberty is fantastic.......and runs my rig (in sig) with ease.

Stick with the Liberty fella if you dont want to spend the extra on the newer Enermax.
Its a better unit than the Corsair (i have both). <<----- this is my opinion and i will stick by it. Corsair is nice and cheap. Powerful aswell.....but lacking in quality.

    Not with these.
There were problem with a few Infiniti's and Galaxies though.

The Liberty and the new ones are fine.

    I stand corrected then

I really like the modu82+ one, I am going to get that for my next system

    Dilemma.

It will have to be the MODU82 then Good to pay a little extra for quality.

    Thanks both

Re: Seasonic S12-380W (Silent 12cm Fan Series)

    Hmmm

So I understand that the 525W Enermax MODU82 is fine for a Q6600 and 8800GTS build.

But supposing you had a Q6700 and a 9800GTX, will the 525 still be sufficient? (I read the power requirement of the 9800GTX is about the same as the 8800GTS, but not sure how different the usage is on a Q6700..)

And if so, would there be enough room left for a mild overclock?

Plenty enough and room for all the overclocking you will want to do.
