Motherboard confusion :surrender:
Looking at the specs of this motherboard clicky under the expansion slots section there was the following
3 x PCI (32 bit)
1 x PCI-E x16 (x4 bandwidth)
2 x PCI-Express (x1)
1 x PCI-Express (x16 Graphics)
The bold stuff is what is confusing me, is the x4 bandwith better or worse etc. and what is it used for (GPU im guessing but dunno).
Re: Motherboard confusion :surrender:
16x is for the graphics card, 1x are for things like wireless cards and 4x is a full size slot like a graphics card but limited to 4x so you can do crossife graphics but it is limited to 4x which is the slowest speed.
Re: Motherboard confusion :surrender:
I'm going to embarass myself here, as I've got a stupid question.
Can you stick a PCI-E x1 card into a spare PCI-E x16 or PCI-E x4 slot (leaving unused pins, due to the slot differences), if you've ran out of PCI-E x1 slots?
Or are PCI-E x16/x4 slots *only* for PCI-E x16/x4 graphics cards?
Re: Motherboard confusion :surrender:
Not a silly question at all. I don't 100% know but I'm pretty sure you can yeah.
Re: Motherboard confusion :surrender:
yes, PCI-E 1x fits in the other slots.
Re: Motherboard confusion :surrender:
Excellent, no wastage! Very resourceful.
Thanks! :)
Re: Motherboard confusion :surrender:
cheers for the help guys, learn something everyday on here :)
Re: Motherboard confusion :surrender:
hopefully to learn again, if you put a 9800gx2 onto tht mobo do u think that only two of the SATA ports will be usable

Just been reading up on this. The syntax used here: 1 x PCI-E x16 (x4 bandwidth) means it can take x16 graphics cards, but will only use x4 bandwidth, not the full x16.

Should leave you 4.. but get the abit IP-35 pro. It has angled connectors to solve this problem.
