    Laptop cdrom in a pc

    Hi,

Does anyone know of an adapter that lets you use a pc cdrom drive in a standard PC 5.25" bay? I know that you can get them in america, but I've yet to find one here.

    Here is an example:

(way to pricey for me though...)

    Thanks,

    T

Re: Laptop cdrom in a pc

I could really do with one in my SFF pc, as I can squeeze in a bigger heatsink if I can get rid of the bulky PC optical drive.

You can see the clearence issues in the above images.

This size of the case (older version - but the same size, compared with a shuttle):

At the moment the processor hits 60C at full load. I want to reduce this a bit and also get rid of the big cdrom as I hardly use it. (I also want a slot loading drive!)

    Main heat producers:

-Core 2 Duo E6320 1.8 overclocked to 3.2Ghz (Hence the heat)
    -7900GS 256Mb

To keep the size down I used an external passive 12V power plug (Think of a large laptop psu). This machine does not use an ATX psu!

It also runs a tad warm as all the fans run at 5V.

Re: Laptop cdrom in a pc

Is that pic you posted not two laptop CDROMs in a single 5.25" bay? Just looking at a CD on my desk it's too wide to fit in a 3.5" bay, nevermind a full drive. Have I understood your question correctly?

Oh sorry!! I mean't in a 5.25" bay! I want to put a laptop cd drive in a standard desktop 5.25" bay. I'll edit my previous post.

If I could find a small 120mm single RAD I would probably go for internal water cooling. I might do external cooling if I can keep it small - for instance a radiator mounted on the rear or something.

Thanks for finding that for me. That might actually come in useful for one of my other pc's.

I will probably have to make an adapter from:

    (Sony AD-7630A)

    (Lian-li aluminium bezel)

My case could do with the extra ventilation to!

Ah ok - I thought at first this shouldn't be hard to find. Can't seem to find any though! Let us know how you get on with the custom-made effort.

Sure - I currently have exams, but in a couple of months I'm going to rebuild this machine. It's been running for almost a year now and there are some things I would like to improve.

Update: Got the slot loading DVD. Dang it's fun to slide cd's in and out! The red glow that can be seen through the slot is a tad ominous though.

If you're still after one, I've just noticed KustomPCs have one here. CD/DVD drives aren't included, naturally.

Ouch, that's expensive, guess that's what the cost is for such a small necessity.

Good luck, Timothius, let us know if you do happen to find something or come up with something ingenius.
