Hi,

i have a dell dimension 9200.

it has e6600 cpu, 2gb ram, 2x160gb hdd and 7900gs graphics card. also dell motherboard.

if i were to buy new ram, motherboard and graphics card, would it still work with the e6600 cpu? ( i just want better spec parts basically).

I would also be buying new case and PSU to power new graphics card (most likely 8800 of some sort)

if i were to buy a proper heat sink (rather than the dell one) would it clip on instead ? (edit, for the cpu ofcourse!)

So you want a new PC to build around the e6600? lol

Why not just sell the dell as a whole a build a new pc with a new CPU, you could get a quad core maybe.

But yes if you buy all new components (including case, since the dell is probably btx or some such standard) the e6600 will work and the new HSF will fit the new motherboard with either push pins or a backplate and screws.

not sure i would really get much for a dell of that spec tbh. that was the reason why.

What are you going to do with the old bits? It's not a bad spec, you might get £300 for it somewhere.

Certainly will work yeah, everything in them is pretty standard except for the motherboard and the cases.

Don't plug them into a normal motherboard as it will blow it up, well mine did anyway......

part of the problem is that their ram is rubbish too. and i need an new mobo to upgrade the ram....

The last Dell I've come across with their own method of wiring the 20-Pin ATX power plug was an ancient P4 machine, now they've switched to standard ATX/BTX.

The Dell(s) I've used Vostro / basically the same as the Dimension home series but for "small business" - use standard BTX / ATX PSUs - standard RAM (last one I had was Samsung which is fairly decent) - all the rest are standard parts - just (in my opinion) budget / low end motherboards by Foxconn... but the PSU and cases are normally quite high quality... the only problems you may face are if the PSU is low power.

Silly question time. Why *not* another Dell machine? Unless you're over the £500-600 price mark for your new machine, it's hard to get a machine that works quite so nicely. Even more so, atm, they're shipping a large batch of Vostro's with 8800GT's installed. Saw a Q6600 deal recently that included 22" monitor, and 3GB of RAM for £650.

As for better spec parts, well, Dell QA team do actually know their job, I've had one machine out of 50 break on me, and even then I'm not 100% convinced yet it is faulty (onboard network adaptor is playing up).
