Re: Woop another new build question!!!

Prices as they are you could fit a nice quad core into that budget or save them a lot of money lol

    Quad core build

    Q6600 + Scythe ninja ~£160
    4GB PC6400 RAM ~£60
    Abit IP-35 dark raider ~£60
    Western Digital 500GB AAKS ~£55
    Optical Drive ~£15
Antec sonata plus + 550w modular PSU ~£100
    Passive ATi HD3450pro ~£30

    £480, silent but deadly

For dual core jsut get an E2180 or similar for £50, would do the job and save £85ish

If you do go dual core though I would probably buy an AMD and build a nice uATX system There are some really nice uATX towers around for very little money and they are great quality.

Intel will work for that too, you would just need something like the HD3450pro where the AMD's IGP can match the HD3450pro

Re: Woop another new build question!!!

I can't see why you would stay away from Vista for Internet, Word & Email. With the caveat that I would only go Vista if I had 4Gb RAM and then went Vista64. There certainly wouldn't be problems with the build suggested by staffsMike.

A quick reminder - unless you're a student studying certain subjects, or have some other special means of access, always remember to factor in the cost of a Windows licence into your build budget

Obviously that can be avoided by using linux, but that isn't for most people's tastes or abilities yet

There is nothing wrong with Vista, for the same price you may as well get it over XP. It is overly scaremongered.

I had vista when it first came out and it was horrible, which i think has led to so many negative views amongst the enthusiasts etc. but it has got better now and with it being virtually the same price as XP he will feel a bit stupid when he has an old OSP which will begin loosing support from MS and websites etc. (a way off i know but vista obviously has a longer life span) but still paid the same price. Why pay the same for something soon to be outdated, less supported and generally inferioir (once vista has aged a tad more, not too long though)???

    Poor advice and very inaccurate.

Nowadays especially, the vista problems are user inflicted rather than OS inflicted.

Re: Woop another new build question!!!

If the're not playing games then there's no need for a graghics card at all, Just get a uATX board with on board vga and a nice uATX case.
It would be very easy to get under £500 with that.
Lets not turn this into a vista banging thread, TGA didn't ask for advice on an OS.

uATX case - EV Black MATX Cube Case with Acrylic Side/Top Windows - No PSU - 12cm Blue LED Fan - Ebuyer (has some good reviews and cheap too)
    CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 2.33GHz 1333FSB Socket 775 4MB Cache Retail Boxed Processor - Ebuyer
mobo - Gigabyte GA-G33M-S2L iG33 Socket 775 onboard VGA 6 channel audio mATX Motherboard - Ebuyer

You wont need to go too far for internet and word processing.

Re: Woop another new build question!!!

Main thing I hate about vista is trying to find everything main thing you have to remember is that vista "looks" prittier than xp, htere's not a great deal of added stuff except graphics (which are more resource instensive )

However given that fact that M$ are now in full vista push so have droped the prices and raised the price of xp . . . probably be best to go with vista.

For word, internet, email I'd stick with:
    onboard graphics motherboard
    e2xxx overclocked
2gb of memory too keep things smooth.
Large file transfur, maybe two HD's in RAID1 :
A decent 400w psu (no more is really needed)
An after market cooler, yes the stock one should be able to cope fine even oc'd to 3ghz, however I still disslike it's abliity to selfclog with dust. nothing as silly as a thermalright 120ultra extreme here just something better than the stock one.

so Blitzen you tried moving large files over a network with vista then?

If it needs to be quick transfering files I would not use Vista.
