Asus P5e3 Premium and ThermalRight Ultra 120 Extreme
Hello everyone,
I want to buy a new motherboard. I choose the Asus P5e3 Premium with the X48 Chipset and DDR3, because I think this is the best motherboard for overclocking at the moment (correct me if im wrong :stupid:)...
Now I wanted to know if the Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme fits on this motherboard, because it has these large copper heatsinks on it... :O_o1:
Thanks,

Edit: Proc: Q9450,
Re: Asus P5e3 Premium and ThermalRight Ultra 120 Extreme
ddr3 has no clear advantage over ddr2, the q9450 seems to run hotter and give minor performance increases over a q6600 so I'd say change the board. I'm not in the know of the x48/x38 boards so can't advise you there but others will come along to help pretty soon.

Yeah I know that DDR3 has no advantage over DDR2 at the moment. But I want a future proof board... h:rolleyes: ... Yeah I also noticed that the Q6600 seems to overclock better then the Q9450. Its because the Q6600 has a higher multiplier, I think ...

Re: Asus P5e3 Premium and ThermalRight Ultra 120 Extreme
any board you buy at this moment is going to be future proofed for around.. a year until intel releases it's new socket.
Spending the extra money isn't worth it. I'd buy something mid range (q6600, P35, DDR2), if you feel it's struggling after a year or so then upgrade to the new socket.
That way you will actually have a small chance at being future proofed, which is just not a term that should be applied to computing lol
P35's actually manage to overclock better than or equal to X38's from reviews i've seen, but both overclock so far beyond what the chips can take cooling on air that there is little point spending the extra money on that alone.

Ah ok.. Thanks for the tip!
Still im wondering if the Ultra 120 Extreme fits on the P5e3 Premium :)

Re: Asus P5e3 Premium and ThermalRight Ultra 120 Extreme
future proofing is quite a waste as it wont be future proof. it's just not worth it for the extra money you are going to pay. with that extra money you could upgrade the system along the line to keep it future proof. but if you really want ddr3 and a q9450 then go ahead it's your choice and money.
and the ultra 120 will fit on any board* it's just which case you choose.
*compatible socket boards.
Re: Asus P5e3 Premium and ThermalRight Ultra 120 Extreme
I will rethink my future system... Yeh, I wasn't sure if the Ultra 120 would fit because the P5e3 Premium has alot of copper heatsinks on the chipset =)...

Re: Asus P5e3 Premium and ThermalRight Ultra 120 Extreme
how high are the copper heatsinks. I can measure my ultra (not extreme) or look on the site and see the clearance. The bottom of the heatsink stands quite high off the board. that plus it standing on top of the cpu would give it quite a bit of clearance :)
Re: Asus P5e3 Premium and ThermalRight Ultra 120 Extreme
it does fit yes, i have it on my p5e which is the same
Re: Asus P5e3 Premium and ThermalRight Ultra 120 Extreme
erm, unless you already have a TRU120E, then good look finding one in stock for a decent price, even OCuk have run out of stock now
