Thinking of trying out Vista 64bit. Do people notice a big difference in performance etc etc? Quite tempted to try it.

Hate vista 32.. quite like vista 64 give it a shot.
I agree with Mike 100%.
I too would like to know what real world advantages people see using the 64bit over 32bit apart from the ram. I dual boot xp with vista 32 bit but never seem to use vista.

No, I havn't really tested fairly but my should be fantastic laptop feels crippled by vista 32, it's sluggish, thinks about everything for far too long, where XP runs so smoothly

I am with Matty on this actually... didn't think I would ever say that!!!
laptops dont come anyway near PC performance... Unless you want to compare a £2000 laptop with a £400 PC (the PC will still have a faster hard drive)...
But I have compared them... with XP they are the pretty much identical for day to day tasks (i'm not talking HD tune and all that rubbish i'm talking feel)
The desktops works much better with Vista than the laptop.
This is a 2.2GHz C2D, 2GB + 1GB ready boost, 200GB 7200RPM drive etc..
From what I understand of the C2D architecture, you will actually get slightly better performance for most common tasks using 32bit rather than 64bit. This is because the C2D can merge some common 32bit instructions, but cannot yet handle merging the 64bit versions. This feature is comming in the awaited Nehalem design.
64bit should only give you noticable gains for certain programs that have been optimised to take advantage of the additional width, and where the memory space requirements of your system exceed 4Gb.
Being a laptop has nothing to do with it, if you have slower parts in a machine - laptop or not, It's going to be slower.
The same goes for pitching a decent C2D laptop against a shock 939 system.....
I generally find the biggest single difference that can be made to a laptop is putting a better HD in
Using windows XP on both my laptop (1.86c2d, 2gb ram) and my desktop (2.9ghz single core a64, 1GB ram), I had the opposite experience... my desktop is faster at all day to day tasks!
Think about the difference in bandwidth laptop and desktop motherboards have... surely that slows laptops too
My old 1.6 centrino laptop with 512mb RAM feels about the same on XP as my new laptop feels on vista. It's embarassing.
Anyway..before the thread gets locked lets agree to disagree
OK mike
To conclude:
Get 64bit if any of these apply to you:
1) You need 64bit applications
2) You need >4gb ram
3) If you are doing a reinstall anyway and you don't have to pay for another license
4) If you are bored and wanna play with vista64 and you don't have to pay for another license
