    Re: Hardware RAID

Are the below cards good? Are they proper hardware raid?

ADAPTEC AAR 21610SA 16 PORT SATA RAID CARD 21610
ADAPTEC AAR 2610SA 6 PORT SATA RAID 2610 CARD

Will they be fast or limited by PCI interface?

Linux is completely client agnostic as far as networking is concerned, just by choosing a Linux server environment, does not effect the desktop environment in *any* way. No Linux distro I know of forces clients to use NFS, on the contrary, Samba is the best choice overall as a filesharing platform for nearly all operating systems.

Mainly interested in the 6 port one... will SATA 150 restrict performance too in RAID 5?

    Absolutely!

I don't think any windows client natively supports NFS although this article

How to install Client for NFS on Windows for a UNIX-to-Windows migration

shows how it can be done, but as you say, Samba is probably much easier to configure and is widely suppoted with both the embedded MS SMB applications and the open source SAMBA project. And although it probably isn't an issue in B0redom's case, Apple Macs support it too,

How do I… Connect a Mac OS X machine to a Samba share? | Linux and Open Source | TechRepublic.com

so you can have a mixed windows/Mac client base all happily using a Linux based file server and all playing nicely together!
