Temps! New Cooler?

Hey,

Just upgraded to the latest versions of both Speedfan and CoreTemp and both are reporting about 10 degrees higher than the previous versions!

Intel TAT is giving the same reading as before.

I'm getting 38-40 using Speedfan and CoreTemp at idle but 25-30 using Intel TAT with my fans on full.

Before I was getting 25-30 using all apps.

Any ideas what's going on?

I've got a Core2Duo E6750 which I've overclocked to 3.2 and an Arctic Freezer Pro 7, time to change the CPU cooler maybe?

It could just be that your reading the right figures now.

The way the on core temperature diode works is by reporting a figure which is not the actual temperature but a difference from a set point. In the original C2D this set point was 85°C the later chips (including yours) all have the set point at 100ºC. The problem comes when software reports values for the core temps but uses the wrong set points.

The newest versions of Core temp and Everest have the right set points while TAT has not been updated (it was never designed for public release).

This is what I imagine has happened to you.

If the new readings are the correct ones then, I've been running my CPU at about 40-50 degrees for the past few months without knowing!

What are safe/normal idle temps for this, anyone with a similar setup?

Opinions vary, but I'd say anything under 60 degrees is fine. I can't remember what the official Intel thermal specs are though. 40-50 is definatly no reason to worry though

Those idle temps are a little higher than usual especially for a G0 chip.

What cooling set up do you have? Case/Fans etc

Your previous values of 20-30 degrees are almost certainly wrong, as it's too close to room temperature.

Webby has almost certainly hit the nail on the head. You can in fact see what Tjunction temperature CoreTemp is using (85C or 100 C).

I've got an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro for the CPU, an 120mm Antec TriCool exhaust fan and an 80mm Sharkoon 2000 intake fan.

Before I updated Speedfan I was running these for silence and so not at full speed and was getting 25-30 idle (low 20s full speed).

Now with the new Speedfan it is reporting around 40 with the fans on full speed.

There must be others using Speedfan who have noticed this?

Seriously, it's not possible to have your CPU running at a temperature in the low 20s with a heatsink and fan, if the room temperature is also in the low 20s. It thermodynamically impossible.

The new temp is correct.

Didnt notice you have OC'ed it to 3.2GHz.

My E2180 at 3.0GHz is 34 idle and i have a better cooling setup (120mm & 80mm intake - dual 80mm exhaust)

So it was obviously reporting the temps wrong on the old Speedfan...

In that case do you reckon it's time for a better cooler, mainly to keep the noise down as the AC7 is too loud on full speed.

Any suggestions? What's the best at the minute, that's also quite cheap!

cheaper but still great

3. Coolermaster Hyper 212

4. Xigmatek HDT-S1283

If you want really low temps then watercooling is the way to go but this will be about £100 at least plus I dont think your case will accommodate it.

I've got an Antec NSK4000, pretty small but still fits full size ATX boards.

I didn't know that the Coolermaster was good, and how's the Scythe Mine?
