Which ADSL+ Router?

    Hi all

    Currently using a DG834G V3

    Wondered what would be better

We are on LLU so therefore need ADSL 2+

Would certainly require gigabit lan and also n spec?

Not that happy with the netgear at the moment due to poor connection speed as well as poor wireless performance.

What would be a good choice router?

    Thanks

    Re: Which ADSL+ Router?

DG834GT (broadcom chipset) with UberGT firmware, Rubycon caps (dunno if that actually makes a difference, but still....), good quality PSU like my Mascot branded one, 40mm northbridge heatsink, and a faraday cage to surround the whole router (i.e. ~£1.79 for double-pack of roasting trays from Tesco).

    Works brilliantly on Be.

edit: oh, and obviously, a good quality earthed telephone line surge protector like a Furse ESP TN series, and probably a nice APC Smart-UPS for the router+PC while you're at it.

Obviously, for the faraday cage you would need a separate access point. Use a decent quality AP by the likes of Cisco/Proxim or perhaps any AP which supports DD-WRT (I bridge two WRT54G units). And forget about gigabit - you would severely limit your options, and ADSL2+ can only do 24Mbit anyway.

    Re: Which ADSL+ Router?

Draytek 2800 series did not fare well with ADSL2+ with O2/Be. I don't know how good the recent ones (2820) are with Annex M.

edit: I searched the Be forums, and one person had instability with the 2820 which was cured by enabling Fast Path, so if it is any good then perhaps it will only be stable on short lines where Fast Path is feasible.

Originally I had a Belkin but this eventually packed in (presumably overheated) and now I have a BT Voyager 2110 which has been okay for 12months or so, but recently it has started to drop it's connection frequently. After the Belkin incident I have allows kept it on it's side too allow better airflow in order to keep it cooler but I've been reading a few reports recently about them suffering from swelling capacitors. I haven't yet checked mine, but presumably this is again caused by heat?
My trouble is that I keep it switched on 24/7 365 which can't help.

    Re: Which ADSL+ Router?

I like having good quality power supplies Fan not needed. I like having cool-running hardware, so I stick some heatsinks to things I think run hot.

The most common problem with speed is poor internal wiring, i.e. the Belkin cable I used to have (I dissected it) had the middle two wires on different twisted pairs, which is silly and can cause massive problems, as could flat telephone extension cables.

What's your current up & down attenuation and sync speed, and how far away are you from your exchange?

    Re: Which ADSL+ Router?

You'd probably need a Broadcom chipset (i.e. DG834GT) to get slightly higher speeds - you're about average for your attenuation. If you are on Be (O2 doesn't offer it) you could have a go at Fast Path which usually increases sync speed a bit.

    @ Ommid,

Who are you with for your Broadband? I have the same router as you on B.E and was having quite a few dropouts per day which is more than annoying! But I was only using the original release firmware until last night, flashed it to the lastest firmware and it hasnt dropped out at all since (heres hoping!)

    [edit: I have the DG834 v3 - wired version]
