    Question Memory timings query

    Hi,

Things seemed to be simpler in the old days *sigh* with just CAS2 and CAS3 to worry about!

Thinking of getting a 4GiB upgrade such as these from Komplett #335298 (OCZ 5-6-6-15) or #347150 (Crucial Ballistix 4-4-4-12). There is a £30 price differential, some of it explained by LEDs and heatspreader on the latter I suppose, but presumably mostly due to the timings. Personally I'm not interested in the minutae of the various splendiferous settings for memory in the BIOS, I'd rather not tamper with that side at all, as I know sweet FA about it...

On that note: On a non-overclocked memory system (ie Cpu may be overclocked but memory stays same as bus speed) would there really be an appreciable difference? That is, one that can be observed without resorting to benchmarks.

Actually what would be a noticeable difference? >5%? >10%? Or more?

    Thanks for any illumination...

    Re: Memory timings query

The performance difference between timings will not be noticeable outside of benchmarks. I spent hours seeing how low I could get mine and the difference was barely 10% on Super Pi times at the lower end and under 5% as you moved towards the 32M test. The standard settings were 5-5-5-15 (54) and the figures I mentioned were obtained by dropping to 4-4-4-10 (35). I did change others but can't remember off the top of my head.

In short, having more, slower RAM at the same price will definitely benefit you more. Don't spend the extra if you don't intent to squeeze every last drop out of the RAM.

    Talking Re: Memory timings query

I might just get 8GiB of slower RAM instead, given what you said! Cheers

PS Not going in the old Asrock mobo (only takes 2GiB) in 'My System' but, eventually, in mobo replacement (Abit Dark Raider).

    Re: Memory timings query

I wouldnt go for 8GB as vista really wont use it. It is unnecessary over 4GB which is slightly excessive anyway.

    Re: Memory timings query

Just thought it might be an idea to get identical sticks to fill all the slots while it was cheap. Am running Vista 64 btw so hopefully it will be utilised, though I agree 8 GiBs for a home system is a bit excessive at the moment...

RAM only gets cheaper when it's the current line so only get as much as you need. Will Vista x64 run better on 8Gig compared to 4Gig? Yes, but depending on what you do it may not be significant. I would go for 4Gig to start with unless you know you need more. Any less than 4Gig is not enough for Vista in my opinion, especially if you're running a quad core CPU. My move to 8Gig was prompted by the one of my 2Gig sticks failing and I couldn't wait for the RMA to replace it so just bought another pair.
