    Razor Barracuda HP-1 anyone?

Does anyone have these beasts of a pair of headphones? If so, how would you rate them? I'm looking for a good quality pair of headphones that i'll use for a long, long time.

    Other competitors for me are:

    Sennheiser PC 161

I've read great reviews about both, but how would you guys rate each as a long-term investment?

Unless you use a the mic a LOT, you'd be better off with something like http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=358846 and a separate mic.

I use the PC150 headphones, had them for 18 months or so now and love them to bits.

Excellent audio quality both on the playback and the microphone.

Previously I used the Madusa 5.1 headphones, they were heavy (uncomfortable) the sound was a little muffled and the mic was appalling. Not sure how the Razors match up but I would try them first, they look the same kind of design.

    Re: Razor Barracuda HP-1 anyone?

Thanks for the replies, i'm going to try and find somewhere near me that sell the HP-1's so I can test them, though i'm doubtful i'll find anywhere as I live in the sticks . If I can't, i'll go with a pair of Sennheisers .

Question Re: Razor Barracuda HP-1 anyone?

Nemz0r, did you get to try out these headphones? If so, do you mind me asking what you thought? (To be technically correct, the follow on question is "IF you don't mind, what did you think?".)

    (Sorry for the resurrect, btw.)

I think you're better off going with a good set of headphones with a separate mic (you can a zalman clip on mic or a stand alone mic).

I'm using Sennheiser HD555s and a Zalman ZM-Mic1. The HD555s are really comfy and produce good sound as well.

Yeah, the Internet seems to have quite a few good reviews on the Sennheiser's you mention, but I for one still really want surround. I've got some Razer HP-1s arriving soon. (Was supposed to be tomorrow, but Scan told me they're delayed - guess they must be popular... good things come to those who "wait", etc...) I'll hope to give a review on them when received.

I'm looking into a pair of these as well, along with the AC-1 card (works well with linux, as well as discrete optical). So I wouldn't mind some opinions.

Got these phones now. If you have any specific questions, I'll try and help, where I can.

Well I have a set of Speedlink Medusas (the original one with the annoying EM noise fault), unfortunately the amp blew so I lost the 5.1 (still works as stereo with an adopter), but when I first got it, it was flawless, the 5.1 effect worked amazingly well, and the bass literally shook the headset on my head, clean, crisp sound. I'm just wondering if the HP-1 is equally effective.

    Bass on HP-1:
With the HP-1's, I'd say you get "vibration" - I don't know if you experience true "bass", though.

I'm directly comparing them to my other in-room sound system, a set of 750 watt speakers, 210 watts of which goes straight to the sub - obviously, that's not fair.

However, indirectly, I can compare them to my "The Plug" and "Spark Plug" (both made by Koss, and around the £5 range) in-ear buds, Sony Fontopia ear-buds (for the month they lasted), and Creative T7700 speakers - as well as my hazy memory of the Medusa's.

The bass on the HP-1 earphones, using my existing setup (Intel HD onboard), doesn't leave me impressed, compared to what I'm "used" to.

    Medusa vibration:
The Medusa's I had vibrated significantly more in the left ear (on both pairs) than the right. I'm paranoid about symmetry - needless to say I did NOT like the effect the Medusa's gave. I can't remember precisely how good/bad the bass was on the Medusa's were, so I can't directly compare them. Do you experience this, aidanjt?

I saw them again (up in my roof) today, so I'll have to get them down and test them again - along with the annoying US plug... I digress.

You're saying "bass literally shook" the Medusa's - the HP-1s "shake", but not DUE TO the bass. I think the Razer website even says words to the effect of "The vibration effect helps immerse you".

    Response required (from me):
I'm interested, also, in what you say about EM noise from your Medusa's. I'm now absolutely determined to "go up" and "bring down" my Medua's to try them again. Did mine also have that fault?

Yet again, saying "it was flawless" hardly helps me leave mine up in the roof...

I heard such good reviews at the time that I "gave them a try" - maybe I didn't try them out for long enough, though.

I'll soon change that - and will post back.

    Note:
My brother uses my computer from time to time to watch a DVD - he used the headphones, as my speakers weren't plugged in, and told me that he thought they were excellent. I asked him about the bass, and he didn't talk disparagingly about it - coming from a solid D&B/Trance lover, surely that must infer something about the cans.

That leaves me somewhat disappointed, especially considering the new 'Medusa Home' is a little cheaper.

I actually did notice that with some music, but I wrote it off as sub-par mixing from the source.

I bought mine 5 or 6 years ago, if you got your set after that it was probably revised, the fault itself deteriorated over time, it was only noticeable after 1 years use, any time a mobile phone went off or did low level network stuff, the 'headset' buzzed but I soon realised that it was the amp that was inducing the noise, rather than the headset itself, before I screwed up the amp, the noise was unbarable.

    Dig em up

The only thing I have to say about Speedlink, is their customer service is lousy to the point of non-existence. On two separate occasions, with contact being a year apart, I entered an 'issue ticket' on their website asking about possible amp shielding fixes to block out the EMI, neither time did I receive a reply, even when I explicity stated that the warrenty expired and I'd take full responsibility for any advice given. I tried bodging some tinfoil and grounding it in the long shot hope of blocking the microwaves, it didn't work and I ended up punching the amp when my phone received an SMS message in the middle of a film, a bit of the tinfoil must have dislodged and shorted the + wire against something because it popped and died right after :/

I've seen reviews that claim the new Medusa headset doesn't suffer the same EMI problem, but once you've been burnt, and you get completely ignored when you ask for a plaster, you tend to be a bit more cautious.
