    Re: What Cooler for q6600?

Not worried about the board (ASUS P5K) so much as the case.

I've got an Antec NSK4000 which is pretty small.
I reckon I've got 1-2 cm to spare over the AC7 so it should probably fit...

I've got an arctic 7 on mine, and it idles at 33C and has never gone above 51C at full load running 2 instances of Orthos with the affinity set to each core.

Your case will also affect cooling, I have a P182 for your information

Is arctic 7 much better than arctic 5? I have a tube of arctic 5 at home atm so was going to use that

worth checking the scythe website for your motherboards compatability with the Mine. The Mine is very large and i remember seeing somewhere on there site that some asus boards wont take it due to the onboard heat sinks

    Re: What Cooler for q6600?

Sorry, I was not referring to the thermal compound, but to the Arctic Freezer 7 Pro cooler, but FYI, I used the paste already applied on the cooler when it arrived, so using Artic Silver may reduce your temps a little.

Should have also added that my CPU is overclocked to 3GHZ at stock voltage, when running at 2.4 clock rate it idles at about 28C and hits 45C on load

    Apologies for the confusion

    Re: What Cooler for q6600?

I've heard very good things about the Thermalright Ultima 90 - it's smaller and lighter than the Ultra 120/120 Extreme, and has almost the same performance.

Anandtech think it matches other top-tier coolers, e.g Tuniq 120, Thermalright Ultra-120, Scythe Infinity with push-pull fans, and the Scythe Ninja Plus B/OCZ Vindicator. Summary here: AnandTech: Thermalright Ultima-90: Small Wonder?

Right now, I'd go for an Ultima 90 or a Noctua NH-U12P. Maybe the Noctua, as it includes the fan.

I after a new cooler for my q6600 to. I read that review and inclined to go for the thermalright - mainly due to the size as my case it tiny (Sharkoon Rebel9 - with the side fan which goes in further by 30mm).

What fan would be suitable? (probably have to go for a 92mm as 120mm will not fit due to that fan)

    Any help appreciated

    Re: What Cooler for q6600?

SSK, I think you might be better removing the side panel fan from your case, if it meant that you could fit a full 120mm fan on the heatsink. Surely it's better to have the best cooling on the heatsink itself, since that's the most important. You can always improve your case airflow in other ways to compensate.

You'll still have the punch-holes in the side panel where the fan is mounted, so if you have negative pressure in the case, air will still enter there.

That would be my plan. You could always look for a slimline fan to mount on the sidepanel, if you can squeeze in that and a 120mm fan? Maybe not if you only have 30mm total clearance.

Quick question. Is the stock cooler any good. If not I am planning to go for a AC PRO 7. Hope I can overclock to 3 GHz

It does the job, if you plan to overclock and want decent temps then def buy an after market cooler.

AC7 would be fine for a 3ghz OC

    Re: What Cooler for q6600?

Been using this Thermaltake Big Typ 120 VX CL-P0310-01 Heatpipe CPU Cooler at TheCoolingShop

Found it fairly easy to fit on an aBit IP-35 Pro, took about 15 minutes (my first build though). Used it with the Zalman thermal compound. Temp wise, getting around 45-50 degrees on a Q6600 running at 3Ghz after 10-12 hours use.
