quick question on ram

i want to buy the corsair xms2 ram

but which one do i get the dhx version or the heatspreader?

the price difference is £2 on scan

I would seriously avoid the DHX ones having now seen them in the flesh. They are stupidly tall and don't really seem to make them any cooler.

Since tall RAM can get in the way of bigger HSF's I would stick to standard heatspreaders.

Depends what you are doing. Overclocking wise ballistix are fantastic but only if you actually need to the RAM to overclock. What system is this going in?

i will only be overclcoking the cpu, and the ballistix are only £33

get the corsair PC6400 as you can't clock a Q6600 passed the RAM's stock settings anyway. That is if you run a 1:1 divider of course. All will become more clear when overclocking if that doesn't make sense. But PC6400 will have the Q6600 running 3.6GHz no problem.

Well youve kind of lost me there :P but i plan to clock the cpu at 3ghz

so is the corsair better then the crucial?

It's not better, there just wouldn't be any difference between them at that clock.

hmmm, i see, well there both priced the same at around £33, i prefer the corsair as ive read bad things about these new ballistix sticks

I've got a set of PC5300 ballistix and had a set of corsair PC5300 xms2 .. both work just the same to me, got the corsair because it was just eaiser to get it from scan and it does a good job.

The ballistix can overclock to silly speeds the corsair couldn't dream of but since both are running in stock PC's you can't tell the difference.

I've heard of more crucial sticks dying than corsair so based on that I would get the corsair I think.

ok cheers, unfortunately the corsair is out of stock on ebuyer :( and i dont want to get ram from scan, cos i want it from the same place as the motherboard:embarrassed:

I'm sure the crucial would serve you well,

as would OCZ, g-skill, geil etc.. My personal preference is geil tbh.

i think i might just go for the crucial then, hopefully that high stock voltage wont be any problem

Shouldn't be, try and get at least some air flow over the RAM sticks what ever you get. It will always help them.
