    Burning Disks...

just thought i'd let you peeps know...

my beloved second-hand old western digital caviar 2.1 Gb hard disk finaly gave up the ghost about a month ago, since i managed to retrieve the mp3's i decided to burn it so that no one can retrieve the data.

its only half done process but i burnt it with my sisters' nail polish remover but it doesn't burn hot enough.

does anyone kno if i could buy like a container of petrol so i can finish the job.

    and how much...

i won't burn any houses or anything tho so calm down.

Erm... Dude - WTF? Just open up the drive and break the platter (shatter that platter, har har - carefully though - might shatter into sharp bits like glass if it's old enough)... Or just throw it about a bit or remove the controller board... I mean who's going to be looking at it and tracing it back to you if it's only got a few dodgy MP3s on it?

They should be fairly brittle IIRC - just skim them at a wall (outside that is!)

Sniffing chicken noodles might not do you any harm but burning solvents and HDDs probably will... And if the whole thing is metal what exactly are you expecting to do to it other than get black residue all over it?!? Assuming it's Aluminium then it's melting point is > 600 celcius... If it's steel based then you're looking at over twice that... Unless I'm being a total idiot there's no chance of it getting that hot with a bit of petrol...

You want to know where to buy some petrol in a container ??

1 - go to BP/Esso/Shell or any other petrol station.
2 - buy a conatiner from the shop
3 - fill it with petrol from the pump

There we are - one container with petrol

Though if we assume you're < 16 they probably won't sell you any petrol... And well if you're > 16 and don't know how / where to get petrol then I think you probably won't be able to get past the hospital staff...

cant u just throw the drive in a pond or something ??
or jump up and down on it, or bury it in the woods somewhere ?
admittedly fire can be a amusing thing if u take care but think of the beloved earth, not to mention your lungs with all the poisonious chemicals being let off when it burns *sigh*

Hahaha! Nutter, just scrape the surface with a knife, or burn it using a lighter, or smash it with a sledghammer!

Or do what Josh did, and pour vodka on it, but go one step further... use sambuka and light it!

What's on this disc exactly, that you need to destroy so completely? Unless you work for MI5, or are a super l33t Spy-Ninj0r with hax0r secrets, just whack it a bit, and get rid of it.

Oh wait... it hasn't got... pictures of naked ladies on it, has it?! If so, may the Lord have mercy on your soul!

Nip down to your local army/special forces barracks and nick a thermite grenade. Lie it on top of the drive, pull pin and retreat to a safe distance!
Alternatively, pop down to your local railway track maintainance depot and borrow some line welding mix (probably like thermite) from them, and repeat as above.

    Hey presto, one melted drive.

You could also mix sugar with a commonly available garden product. But that would be bad.
Please note, I am not suggesting raiding Army property, a thermite raid on the train depot, an Egg-raid on Mojos or any other 'raid' on 'anywhere'.
    Thank you.
