    CPU Temps

Now im not sure if this is totally normal or if its because of the weather were having but im slightly concerned at the temps of my cpu (e6300). I recently bought a scythe ninja and installed it about two weeks ago as i wanted a quieter cooling solution...no doubt its really quiet but i was a bit disappointed with the temps that the cpu was reaching (using coretemp and everest).

I firstly ran the cooler passively with no fan for a week just as a test to see what the temps would be like. The results were rather disappointing with the temps idling at ~46 and on load hit about ~55 and still rising! So after that I thought that this couldnt be right with this cooler as I heard so many good things about it..so then I started thinking maybe I put too much or too little AC5 on the cpu..and then this lead to countless amount times of re-applying the paste and re-mounting of the cooler (and yes it was sitting properly as I took the mobo out and made sure it clicked in and could see the push pins on the other side) but still to no avail as the temps were pretty much the same for the 3/4 times i did this.

So after all this I decided to attach the fan that came with the ninja to see how the temps would be affected. It helped (obviously) but by just a few degrees...and now the temps idle at ~44 and when stressed by orthos (for about 6 hours) the temp was hitting the 60 mark (which to my annoyance began shouting some harsh words). So as you can tell im still not too happy about these temps..I was using the services of a AC7 freezer before but to be honest the difference in temps is minimal. Im sure there must be something wrong..

So if all the ninja owners out there (and non ninja owners) could grace me with your help it would be greatly appreciated

Im sure it is flat...and im also sure I applied the paste properly aswell, put a teenie amount in the center then used an old but clean credit card to evenly distribute the paste.

Try re-seating the CPU and only put a very thin amount of gunk on it.

Will try again tomorrow, instead of spreading it do you think I should leave a bit of it in the center and let the heatsink do the rest? or is my method ok?

Righty-o. Today then I took of the ninja (which seems to cut me every time) and re-applied the paste on the cpu. First time I powered the thing up and checked the temps it reached 62 idle..definately needed more paste I thought to myself. Then I took the paste off applied a slightly (very slight) thicker layer and then put the ninja back on and powered everything up. Opened up coretemp and it gave a reading of 38 which was more to my liking I was then tempted to re-apply a tiny bit more paste but I thought I would leave it alone this time as I dont want to tempt fate and make it worse.

So currently its at 40 idle and considering its another scorching day (if your in london) I thought this was a much more respectable temp reading What do you think? Do you think it's worth applying the thermal paste again in attempt to get the temps lower? Or is this good enough and I should stop complaining?

    Re: CPU Temps

Given the higher ambient 40C at idle sounds okay but I'm not familiar with the cooler. Do note that most Intel IHS's are concaved so a small blob or slightly thicker application in the center is not a bad thing. Tom from Chilled PC has some good pictures of the lapping he did and it's very evident that the edges are higher than the center.

If you're using Arctive Silver 5 thermal paste, Arctic Silver advise you to squirt a thin line onto the CPU heatspreader only and not to spread it. The heatsink should flatten the paste out into an oval.

This is the cooler bugbait, its the scythe ninja. I think in my case it was just that I put too little paste on the cpu in the first place, ive put just enough on the cpu now that you can barely read the lettering on the cpu.

I was contemplating using this method but I did a bit of research around the hexus forums and it seemed that the most popular way of applying the paste was to spread a thin layer on the cpu. Do you think its worth trying the instructed way? More importantly do you think it could result in lower temps?

I know the cooler, just never used it personally so not familiar with the performance expectations . It's meant to be a paper thin layer, not "rice paper thin". It still needs to be thick enough to ooze a little as the final pressure is applied to "fill" in any holes.

Thats the perfect way to describe the thickness of how I spread it Also the arctic website says something about 'break in time' something to do with the paste breaking in (lol) so does that mean that the temps could drop still after the break in time has been reached?
