best remote control to customise for my needs?

    hi

couldn't think of a better place to put this so:

i have quite a bit of custom kit - philips lcd, onkyo amp, will have a creative zen HTPC with IR (probably) - recording using a tv tuner card.

what i'm looking for is a way to control it all with one unit - maybe a pda or similar? I doubt mainstream controllers will control the kit, esp. the onkyo.

    Any suggestiongs for hardware /software?

Fell free to move this mods if you can think of somewhere better...

I have tried a bit of software that controls multi devices on a palm, only downsid is the total lack of range on my palmIIIXE, its less than 1m. Luckilly the software was a demo version. You can get a IR extender thing that goes on the front of a palm, I havent tried this. So word of warning you need to check range before flexing the plastic.

The new Philips Pronto NG (TSU3000) might well be what you're after, or if you want colour as well and can justify the extra £££ the ProntoPro NG (TSU7000), the Pronto range have a large consumer base out there, so lots of help available on them if you need it. Or you can try and pick up a bargain on one of the older Pronto models.

I nearly got a one for all mosaic, its a lcd based system that you can update using a pc. Richersounds had them for £50ish a while ago, went and had a look at one, its bloody hudge. Value for money its great, but if you want something small and stylish forget it. The kameleon from the same company has had very mixed reviews, complaints about short battery life and some people reckon they hummmmmmmmmm.

quick question - these propriety ones that you mention - any experience with programming them with your own macros (e.g. "shift" then "9"). the onkyo is a pain....

    And it's very good.
