    Seagate Barracuda 2700.11 500Gb

    Hello

I have recently bought a Seagate Barracuda 2700.11 500Gb SATA Hard Drive and am having problems instaling it into my computer. It is probably a faulty Hard Drive but want to make sure before I send it back.

esentialy what is happening is My BIOS wil not detect the HDD. I have pluged both cables in correctly and have even used the same cables my current HDD is using but stil no joy. Also when the HDD is plugged in I can hear a low intermitent beep/buzz coming from the device and it also makes the motherboard take alot longer when detecting drives.

As I said, I suspect it to be a faulty HDD but would like to make sure before I send it back. Is there anything else that can be causeing this? My motherboard is an Asus P5B-E.

Can you put your sata controller in IDE mode?

Or maybe you need to set the new drive to Sata 150 using jumpers, rather than sata 300. Doubtful, but you never know.

Also, you could maybe try to hotplug it in when in Windows. I fixed a mates HTPC that way - his Blu-ray drive was freezing the system, but once I booted into XP, then installed the drive, it was fine.

How would you put my sata controller into IDE mode? what does it mean?

The jumper on the HDD is already on 1.5, so i tryed moving it to 3 but no difference

Also, how do you hotplug a HDD?

Your BIOS should have the option to set the SATA controller as a RAID device or an IDE device - look at your manual if you're unsure.

As for hot plugging, if supported (again, check the manual) by your motherboard, boot into Windows & try to plug the device in.
