    Need some serious help

my computer has decided not to play any of my games anymore, it seems to run everything else fine, but every game i have now fails to load. my computer also seems to be taking quite a while to load, so i think im gonna take it back to day one. however i just wanted to check what i needed before i do this. i have the copy of windows, the asus motherboard disc and my graphics card driver cd, do i need to make a driver disc or something for everything else. apart from this computer ive only ever had a laptop and that came with a utility disc which had all the drivers i needed. please help,

    thanks

p.s. kaspersky has now decided to say its database is corrupt and now wont do anything.

Might be worth running a memory check first. Download MEMTEST 86+ and burn it to a CD - boot off that and let it run for a couple of hours.

Download the ISO file and burn it to a CD. Yoiu can then boot offg the CD and it will do a very comprehensive test of all the installed memory.

    Tests your RAM for errors.

How long have you had your computer (could be the result of accumulated errors etc. over a long period)?

    Re: Need some serious help

memtest tests the RAM (RAM being Random Access Memory). Running it from the CD means that you don't have to boot into windows (which is giving you problems).

The link give you the source of the memtest program. You need to download the ISO image whichb is shown as a zip file, unzip it using winzip, and then use something like NERO to burn the ISO image to a CD.

This is another link - same program - bit more info.

    Re: Need some serious help

As peterb says: Download the ISO and use Nero (or similar) to burn to a disc. If it`s bootable then you leave it in your boot drive, restart your computer.......

Your problems could be the result of many things: Faulty memory giving errors, corrupt drivers, programmes not uninstalling properly.....Worms, trojans.

Memtest will test for RAM faults, which may be worth doing before proceeding to reinstall windows.

    Re: Need some serious help

Are you trying to run it from within Windows? If so - don't. Burn it onto a C D and boot the computer from the CD. Use the information in the second link I gave you.

This is worth doing because if the memory is giving problems, your rebuilt system will still give you problems - you might not be able to reload Windows anyway.

    Re: Need some serious help

You`ll need motherboard drivers (chipset, audio etc.). Graphics card drivers & drivers for other installed cards - such as seperate soundcard, tvcard...whatever is installed. It may be better to download the latest versions of these from the relevant `sites (it could well be an early version that is causing problems [though later versions aren`t always better]).

    Re: Need some serious help

If you have done the memtest thing and it is not that then all you will need is your mobo cd (and if you have a network card, as opposed to it being built into the mobo then a network driver cd aswell). Everything else you will then be able to download from the internet but it is obviously easier to get it onto CD first. CHECK YOUR MOBO CDS BEFORE TO MAKE SURE THEY WORK, you dont want to do that all and find you have no way to get to the internet to get drivers for your network drivers (impossible situation ) and other important things

ok the problem has now got worse. at random times i will get BSOD and it will say dumping physical memory or something like that and in the top right it says memory management. as memtest said no errors with the RAM, am i right in thinking that this is a problem with the HDD?? if so what am i meant to do, i have pretty much everything backup on an external HDD should i just buy a new one??

    Re: Need some serious help

How long did you run Memtest? The better test is the second link I pposted - Memtest 86+ which again should be run from CD - not from within windows. Run it for at least a coupole of hours - or overnight.

Next suspect would be PSU - what make is the one you have?

There are a number of things that could vbe causing this, memory and PSU are the obvious ones, which may have caused corruption of the hard drive. If all your data is backed up, re-installing Windows may provide a temporary cure, but if there is an underlying hardware fault, the problem will return sooner or later.
