I'm not sure that is entirely fair, as certainly when Vista was new everyone was steering well clear of 64-bit due to fears, XP64 experiences and driver woes.
Of course over time, Vista 64 has bedded down, drivers become plentiful and people get experienced with it, making it (as far as i can tell) a useable OS that can be recommended (as much as Vista can be).

As to the O.P., can you tell any difference? I'm not convinced i'd ever advise anyone to upgrade from 2 to 3 Gig unless it was a 2 Gig stick with a spare slot for another cheap stick.

I.e. Retail upgrades to retail, OEM to OEM etc.

I do not think you can upgrade a corporate edition (might be wrong). Also, if you ever need to reinstall, you have to install the old OS first and then the vista upgrade again.
Upgrade (officially) does require an OS on the system. For you to do an in-place Upgrade then it has to be of the correct type, but that does not mean that you can't do an upgrade if you can't do an in-place upgrade.

And no, OEM does not upgrade to OEM. It upgrades to "retail". You shouldn't have a corporate edition on a personal machine.

As to your last point you can do a clean install from an Upgrade, so no, you won't need to install XP again. One point to note, though, is that your XP license is no longer valid once you perform the upgrade.

It was a 2gb stick. I bought a new set of 2x2gb RAM.

I can tell the difference in the game a little, the zoning times have improved and also so has tabbing out, which I do quite a lot. I think I'm gonna upgrade to Vista 64 now though.

Having done the upgrade trick myself, it took 2 re-activation phonecalls before MS voided my copy of Vista.....

Seems they can detect it now.
