high idle temps

Specs are in my sig.

I seem to get high idle temps for some reason, thought it might be the weather, but its been cold for the last two days and the temps have only gone down by 2 degrees

Idle now is 36-43
Load is between 52-59

on hot days the idle is 37-45.

Although when I play games its around 38-48

Anyone know why this might be?

doesnt leave much room for overclocking, it was abit of a struggle installing the HSF, but it did finally secure in place and I dont really want to reseat it, cos it would mean getting everything out and dismantling the rig.

check that the HSF is secured properly if u already havn't, it mite of loosened and isn't getting good contact.

How can I check it without taking everything out?

1) I take it you're on about the cpu

2) What are you using to view the temps?

u shouldn't have to take everything out...just use ur finger around the sides to see if it is flush where the plug/pins get pushed in. but im assuming u have a stock HSF, if u have a different one it might be harder to check.

I'm using coretemp, ive also used a few others like speedfan HWmonitor and stresstest on OCCT, all show the same teamps respectively

It seems flush, will check again, and no im not using stock hsf, using the one in my sig, the Akasa 965 :P which uses the same method.

opps, i missed that. yea just make sure it aint come loose, similar thing happened to me i started getting higher temps.

I was experiencing similar problems not too long ago with my idle temps reaching about 44 with a scythe ninja on a e6300!

Now my temps idle at 31 which I am quite happy with (even in the hot days never goes above 34 :))

Heres what I did, hopefully it could be of some help:

1) Removed the motherboard and re-applied the paste on the CPU (just left a blob in the center, but with quads i think its different)

2) Attached the heatsink (which was the problem in the first place) and made sure it was properly connected i.e made sure the push pins came through the other side of the mobo and made sure the heatsink didnt move and had a flush connection with the cpu

3) Put everything back in its place and made sure there was no cables/wires distracting the case's airflow (can make quite a difference)

This was pretty much the procedure i did till i got it right and was happy with the idle temps. In my case it was the way i applied the paste and also the heatsink connection which caused my high idle temps in the first place.

I can't work out why your idle temperature fluctuates so much (or the load one for that matter). 36-43 ignoring the ambient effect seems way too wide a range. When is it 36 and when is it 43?

Same thoughts here, that range is way too wide especially for a g0. Probably mean that the HS is tilted slightly not making good contact with the some cores?

For the paste, it has to be applied in a thin line that spans 3/4s of the chip across the middle. I think reseating would be your best bet looney ; its a bit of work, but at least you can be sure that you tried it.

I am pretty sure you can reseat without having to remove the whole motherboard with push-pin heatsinks?

Sorry should of made it clear, thats the range of the cores, at the moment core 1 and 2 are at 43 degress, they always stay the same to each other, and the other two 3 and four are 39 and 37. They sometimes fluctuate by 1-2 degrees depending on what im doing.

Also thing is on startup they are 31-36, and then just rise upto those.

Yeh I may need to reseat it i guess, but with pushpins its impossible to fit with the motherboard installed, no space for moving around for starters.

I have AC MX-2 and arcticlean, will they suffice? do i need to spread it out with a card, or just do what you said and maybe it\'ll spread by itself?

Well that does sound like the HSF seating or paste might be the problem. There's usually some difference between the cores, but not that much.

No probs bud, your problem is most likely related to the paste or HSF placement. Re-seat it again with new paste and you should be alright

I had that MX stuff once, its horrible stuff. Its very hard to spread, very grainy also. No idea bout the mx-2 but maybe the paste is the problem here since you say your heatsink is pretty much flush and seated OK. Either ways .. a reseat with different paste [just to be sure its not the paste, tub of AS5 costs like 5 quid] might take care of all your problems or you could jus try reseating with the mx2 first.

or not.........*generally* things go wrong because of user error, the mounting mechanism has nothing to do with it... hence why there are lots and lots of happy users of intel systems that don't have'bent motherboards'

i'd like to see more than one piece of evidence to support your quote...

MX-2 is very good, its not like the mx1 :)

I installed RealTemp, and it shows my temps lower then Coretemp and all the rest, it shows it less then 4c, which one do i trust? :ill:

Personally I have never had a problem with MX1 - but it does take a few thermal cycles to 'bed in' after which the temps are lower than they are at first power up.

Can you post a pic? Alternatively can you list the temps and the "to TJMax" figures?

I always go with whatever reports the highest..within reason of course.

That way you know the worst case temps :)

That's true (of course). But I'm convinced that Real Temp gives the most accurate reading most of the time. You just need to check against the die temp to avoid stupid figures.

Did you reseat the heatsink?

Its not a matter of which temp monitor he uses if he's experiencing such high temps with coretemp. Stick with one until you have sorted out your temperature issues so that you don't introduce a different variable into the equation. Realtemp shows all my cores 5 degrees lower than coretemp, and according to Abit and Extremesystems, realtemp is right.

But when on a mission to reduce temps, stick with one program. And coretemp is giving you higher temperatures relatively compared to the rest with q6600s and that's the issue. If you have reseated, have you had any change?

Unfortunately I have reseated it yet, havent had the time to do it to be honest, I'm just trying out real temp, to see if i actually need to reseat, as I want to avoid taking everything apart:embarrassed:

LOL .. I would not have hesitated a second if I was in your shoes, I love taking my PC apart and putting everything back together!

But point is you are going to have to sort this issue out because 45 idle is NOT GOOD. Your load temps will be through the roof, and you haven't even overclocked yet. Those idle temps are 8 degrees higher than my overclocked q6600 idle temps. Fair enough, I have a larger heatsink but still I can bet there is something very wrong here.

And when ambient temperatures do go up in summer, those temps are going to scale also.

So set yourself 1.5 hrs aside and reseat :D

This is just a random thought: its possible that your Q6600 is being hit with more voltage than necessary, worth checking out your BIOS and setting everything to factory defaults? Can you put up a cpu-z shot?

lol, i havent had the time, and if i'm honest, i'm a little scared when installing the cpu and hsf, dont ask why :embarrassed:

My loads temps arent that bad i think, highest on a core is 59c, on OCCT stress test for 1hr, and when i'm playing games or doing anything else highe temp on a core is 50c and those were on a hot summers day :P on a normal day it decreases by 2c, but yeh it doesnt leave much room for OCing.

I'm gonna try and reseat sometime nextweek and see what happens. thanks fo rth link.

Everything in the BIOS is standard, apart from C1E and EIST which are disabled, i think the standard setting for volts is on auto. Heres a screenshot.

Vcore ain't the problem.

How much do your temps fall by if you leave the case open? And that load temp ain't so bad. What's your load on Small FFT Prime95?

Havent tried that out properly tbh, i did leave it open once, but it didnt change anything iirc, my pc is pretty cool inside to be honest, got a total of 6fans varying in sizes and got the cable tidyng done, so airflow should be ok, the hsf doesnt get very hot either when i touch the metal fins

Well load temps are the most important so I guess if you are hitting 60 you have nothing to worry about if you don't plan on overclocking. If you do, a reseat is mandatory before you start pushing voltage through it. Hope the new build is cruising along great otherwise :D

Yeh i'd like to overclock sometime in the future :( to get more out of the 8800GT I need over 2600mhz, so thats something i'm aiming for (not a huge overclock i know). The build is going fine so far :D have had a few minor issues like temps and hdd being slower then i expected.

it may not be "always" true but on our office rig (DELL XPS710) this is so close!
it is runnning 32C = idle and 50's full load... i hope i have some cash to burn! wish i could have that XPS710 also as my personal rig! hehehe

You won't get this unless you have a top cooling case, a top CPU cooler and a fairly low ambient. Even then it depends on the CPU VID, your mobo and what the OC is.

The Dell won't be OC, and if it's in an office I expect it's one of the lower power models.
