    Most Expensive?

OK.. I recently got asked by a friend what the most you can spend on a (one, single) computer... The things you get to talk about at midnight when your tired and have spent the last 6 hours playing DOW non-stop is amazing! Anyhow, it's hypothetical, so forget about getting value. We're talking sheer cost here... and it'd have to be working.

It would not include labour (as in this hypothetical situation it would be self-built) but delivery and VAT would have to be paid.

Knock together a system on scan and post a screenshot here! Let's see how much you can manage to spend on one computer

    Highest Price yet:

    Re: Most Expensive?

The sky really is the limit. Without puting some bounderies on it, you could go an build a massive serer with a dozen SAS drives and 4x Quad Xeons loaded up with probably 32GB of RAM or so.

Sure it isn't meant to be a workstation, but slap a couple of big ass expensive video cards in there and you can have dual or quad 30" screens for video editing or pretty much anything.

    Re: Most Expensive?

define single computer - one that is made of 1 case +1 or more screens, or a huge server station that acts as 1 computer?

i think i got a 3XS system up to around £10k once when i was bored, funnily enough that was after dawn of war too...

if you're insisting on using scans site to get it from then..

the stuff staffmike and funkstar mentioned + that skyline to drive it home in.. it adds £37k to the price... why pay delivery costs?

    Re: Most Expensive?

Oh and to make it the most expensive, get the case custom made from Titanium oe even Platinum.

Won't make the computer any better though

    Re: Most Expensive?

Does Scan do that sort of thing? Can I really get a platinum case from Scan?

Maybe I should get a Water-Cooled, custom built Caesium casing I'll certainly know of any leaks

But come on - ~£37K isn't good enough! I want it down to the penny

    Re: Most Expensive?

    One of these:
    Supermicro X7DB8+ I5000p, S2 x 771, PCI-E (x8), DDR2 ECC 533/667, SATA II, SCSI/SATA RAID, E-ATX

    A couple of these:
    Intel Xeon X5460 Socket 771 x 4, HarpertownCore, 3.16GHz, FSB 1333MHz, 12MBCache, Retail

Scan don't have ECC RAM, so add in 16 of these:
    CT51272AF667 - 4GB, 240-pin DIMM , DDR2 PC2-5300 from Crucial.com

Then you need graphics, SCSI RAID or SAS RAID controller, a bunch or drives for that, a boot drive, monitor, opticals (BluRay obviously), etc.

a massive rack mountable case will be needed:
    Supermicro 846TQ-R900B chassis Black

Thats got space for 24 SAS/SATA drives, so you might want to put two RAID controllers in there.....

Managed to get it up to £13,800 ish on scan and another £2,800 on Crucial and that wasn't everything. So you could add another grand on top of that easy.

    Re: Most Expensive?

funkstars got similair to the one i was doing.. except i added the Q9775 extreme - £200 more.. so + £400 ontop of funkstars..

and you gotta have the 2 skylines to take the stuff home in so add £63k ontop aswell.. ooh and satnavs for each skyline so you both know where you going.. the list goes on...

you might be able to get some stuff on today only, so deduct £200 quid off

grand total £81,000 (depends on today only prices)

ps i think we scared him - mediaboys logged off..

    Re: Most Expensive?

I could build you a server with 2008 Enterpise and 1000 device CALs.

It would probably be over £90,000

This is with only 25 CALs

    24GB Ram
    2 x Xeon® X5260
    8 x 450GB SAS drives
Windows Server 2008, Datacenter x64 Edition (2 CPU)

    etc etc

    Re: Most Expensive?

    Million dollar laptop.

    Million dollar desktop.

    $750k case.

    £12,400 mouse.

A cheapy £2200 keyboard made with hairs of virgins (there are probably more expensive keyboards but can't be bothered to look - plus, those are more 'special' (I am assuming they are joking, but eh - who knows).

It's too bad the 'desktop' look a bit small. If they make something similar but the size of a large server tower, I am sure that it can end up many times more expensive. And once you rip it open and fit it with a couple of those those, and other top end equipment, add the $800,000 Decadent Display and you should come somewhat close to most expensive. Maybe.
