Cpu z not showing correct cpu speed

Hi there I bought a new computer a couple of months ago and had it assembled by the shop as im not too good with computers. After reading about overclocking and such i downloaded cpu z and ran it. Im using an intel e6850 with an xfx 780 mobo and ocz 1066 ram.

In the overclocking guides on here it shows that this cpu should be running with a fsb of 333 and a multiplier of 9 however cpuz shows the multiplier to be only 6.

I went into the bios to have a look and found it was set to 7 so i changed it to 9 and rebooted but this did not change the reading.

Is this a problem with the program or do i have a faulty chip/mobo?

do you have intel stepspeed enabled? It underclocks the CPU at idle to keep it cool etc..

No its not enabled. I incresed the fsb to 1450 total and this showed and increase in clock speed but still with a multiplier of 6. When i ran cpuz just now after rebooting it flickered to 9x a few times briefly but is now back to 6.

Is C1E Support on 'auto' or 'disabled' under CPU settings in the BIOS

run something cpu intensive in the background (do some folding for us ) and see what it says

Am running orthos now it is showing stable 3ghz 9x

The 6/9x multiplier step definately sounds like Speedstep is still enabled, are you sure you have disabled all power saving features?

check for any options in BIOS named something like "cool 'n' quiet" which limits CPU clocking due to heat restrictions.

I have limited experience with OCing though, so probably not of much help.. but yet again - it's always worth checking

C1E is part of Speed Step and was the reason the multi was changing

Its is a power saving utility but has been argued that it can cause instabilities.

i know what it is, and thats pretty unsubstantiated and generally considered a good thing to have.

Then your question was pointless or you didnt read through the whole thread.

He wanted to stop the multiplier changing. Disabling C1E stopped this from happening.

Hi again and thanks for your replies. What is the general consensus about c1e then? Initially i was worried that my cpu wasnt running at the correct speeds but now i know that it is would it be better to turn c1e back on? I have overclocked it to a stable 3.6ghz will this effect the deciosion to reenable c1e?

C1E is a pretty good tech.
It'll just downclock your CPU when its not in major use to save power.

I use it and have zero problems. Same with any system I've built with it.

just underclocks proccy when not in use
so you get less power draw

its the same as AMD's cool 'n quiet
