New Build
Dont ask for help on this often but I'm going to be building a new macine for me at work, the Dell thing I have now is naf
Going to be running different Virtual Machines on it for testing stuff so wanna get something thats not gonna slow down, was thinking Vista64  and a big wedge of RAM with a Quad core of some description..
Anything specific I need or can I just build a normal box?

Re: New Build
i'd go with a Q6600 as there still good bang for buck
some decent RAM, i.e. Corsiar stuff, probably 4GB seeing as though your going to be using a 64 bit os anyway
a decent PSU summin like a corsair/seasonic/enermax
but practically everything else is your choice...
^^^of course that stuffs your choice as well

Re: New Build
Treat yourself.. get 8GB it's still only around £110 - £120 for a decent set or quad channel :)
Q6600 is good yeah, plenty of poke even if you are running it stock. Obviously they are ripe for a nice 3.0GHz stable overclock though ;)
You can pretty much build a normal box. Are you looking for performance or ultimate 24/7 reliablity? I'm assuming the budget wouldn't cover both :p

Re: New Build
STOP!!!
VMware server+Vista x64= utterly, utterly, utterly :censored:
It ran fine on My XP, but on Vista x64 (and I think x86 as well) it runs really badly. It takes about 10 minutes to fire up a VM, during which time the whole computer completely locks up
I understand that that happens to everyone with Vista x64
Also, if you are running Vista sp1, every time you boot you have to press F8 and select disable driver signature enforcement.
Either use VMware workstation after making sure it works, or dont use vista for it.
FWIW I have a Core2 quad Q6600 with 8GB RAM and an Asus P5k-E Wifi/AP motherboard.
Vmware server runs fine on any server OS as well.

Re: New Build
Hmmm, got VM2007 here on my laptop which is just Vista Business 32 and that seems to be ok but obv dont wanna be stairing at the laptops 12" screen all day...
Dont really wanna be using a server for it as under normal circumstances it'll be my normal work PC..
