First Intel Atom mini-ITX mboard/CPU launched

I just noticed this story posted on Tom's Hardware relating to this mini-ITX motherboard/CPU combo available at Tranquil PC. It's not badly priced at £52.90+P&P, either.

Does anyone have plans for this board? It never bores me to read someone converting toasters, soft toys and Lego kits into mini-ITX PCs.

Edit: I just noticed it's £52.90+VAT+P&P, with P&P at £6.50 for all UK (not just mainland, afaik).

Incredible really - and amusing that the northbridge needs a fan but the cpu doesn't?!

Whoa...that's so...reasonably priced...makes a change from the other ITX prices I've seen over the years...

Re: First Intel Atom mini-ITX mboard/CPU launched

To be honest that board is quite useless with 10/100 LAN and no PCIe slot.
Would make a perfect NAS platform otherwise :S

Also we could get SCAN to stock it

Incredible really - and amusing that the northbridge needs a fan but the cpu doesn't?!
I'm sure someone is smart enough to replace the two heatsinks into a big one which is fanless

Re: First Intel Atom mini-ITX mboard/CPU launched

I can really see dream HTPCs popping up soon. Atoms, HD3450s (or HD4450s (taking a guess at the title) if it's better in any way, or if Intel pull their finger out, one of their GPUs) and SSDs. Clearly the capacity of SSDs won't be much use in most HTPCs for a while, but it's still a very attractive possibility for someone like me who has a little PC to do recording, then moves it over to my main PC when necessary.

You're probably looking at about 15W under 2D load (no idea how much DVB-T cards use though).

All we need is someone to make an Atom-based microATX board with PCI and PCIe and the cost saving over the current low-power trend (mobile on the desktop, as I've got at the moment) will be just as big as the one between desktop PCs and MotD ones. Which is essential the way energy prices are going.

I've always wanted to build a gaming pc with an ITX board with a pcie - still waiting for a board to come along that can provide it.

It is possible, if you search there are boards with slots for the latest intel mobile chips and pcie which you could make into a gaming rig. They just cost about £150, and a decent graphics card will stop it being anything like so small anymore [even a 3850 is about the same depth as a uATX MOBO]. Then you really want a 3.5" HDD and it all starts to seem a bit pointless.....

Back on topic .... That looks like good pricing, I have been considering making a diddy HTPC for a while but the price of a decent C7 put me off, this is practically forcing me!

There is a m-itx motherboard by EQS (not ECS) that supports AM2 CPUs and has a PCI-E slot

Re: First Intel Atom mini-ITX mboard/CPU launched

There are a few 775 ITX boards which support 45nm quads and have a full x16 PCI-E slot, expect to be in the red after buying one though.

Re: First Intel Atom mini-ITX mboard/CPU launched

I really am quite looking forward to this (sad i know!) and if it werent for the plumbing expenses this month i'd have to get one.

But here's my question the HSF is on the chipset ja? So why do we need a fan? I've got a 945GM thats passively cooled in my media center in the lounge.

for my room i'd like to have one thats passively cooled again, with a passive CPU, and SSD.

Anyone know if it will be possible to change the heatsink to something passive? Or is there really just that much going on to create the heat?

Just HDMI'd do - you can always buy an HDMI > DVI cable, and it's the same video signal. The inclusion of 100Mbit ethernet as opposed to the gigabit that the 945G can support is disappointing, to say the least. That said, the price drop to £42 ex VAT and Del is nice. I'd look for a better feature set though.
