Occasional memory dump and BSOD

Just recently I've been getting the odd memory dump and restart on my main rig (see my system)... It generally happens whilst playing games, Assassins Creed in fact. Normally I would be very worried but it doesn't very often.

any ideas? I'm guessing either RAM or GPU is to blame.

Any apps people can recommend to find the root of the problem?

Does it mainly happen on warmer days? Overheating issue?

I think that is most likely the case although the CPU seems to stay nice and cool (has an arctic cooling freezer pro), under load or if I alt tab out of games I've not seen it creep any higher than 26 degrees (and its in a warm south facing room) but I should verify that with cpu-z or the like. I'm not sure how accurate the Abit monitor is. If I can work out exactly what is over heating then perhaps I can make some case adjustments (antec 900). (apologies if I'm being very vague I don't feel quite awake this afternoon, big lunch).

Stick Orthos on the RAM, then CPU (not both at once though). Since you have a Quad, make sure you use 2 sessions and set the affinity to load all 4 cores at once. Use Coretemp to obtain more realistic CPU temperature readings, the Abit one is likely to be way off. My Abit QuadGT would report CPU temps up to 51C when Coretemp would show 60C+. If Orthos lasts 3+ hrs then the problem is probably your GFX card (or maybe the PSU).

If there are any hardware faults then its covered, manufacturers warranties stand and its still covered by yoyotechs return to base 1 year warranty to.

I would suspect RAM unless the BSOD gave any clue. Have you prevented automatic reboot? If so then you could post what the error message is.

Is the RAM at stock voltage or have you changed the BIOS to 2.1v (I think that's right for your RAM)?

Untick automatically restart on system error and write down the BSOD error. If it's anything like NV4DISP.DLL it's your graphics card drivers or GPU overclock.

(Thats the only time i have had them anyways )

same here, alot of my past bsods were because of a over zealous overclock. try overclocking less and see if that helps

Yeah Orthos is the best test for your RAM and CPU... if that can run for hours without fault your components are working fine.

If that doesn't give you an answer as to what is causing the problem then an error code would be able to tell us what the problem is specifically.

Hopefully its nothing major, maybe too much of an overclock or a driver problem.

Most of my hardware is running a stock speeds, my gfx card is of the pre-overclocked variety though.

The summary should be enough...

GFX card by the looks, pretty sure heat is the culprit... since I ramped the fans up its not done it again and I had a clean 2- 3 hours of assassins creed running earlier.

Any suggestions as to how I can stop this from happening in future... perhaps the stock cooler isn't quite up to the task or something? any suggestioned gratefully accpeted.

Not a bad idea, it is still under warranty (2 warranties, yoyotech's and the manufacturers).
