Heatsink - Quad Core - Any Suggestions?
I am looking to get a new heatsink for my quad core rather than using the stock heatsink. Ive been having a look on scan and there a quite a few. Any suggestions on which one to go for? Im not to bothered about the price as most seem to be reasonable any way.
Cheers

Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme
Re: Heatsink - Quad Core - Any Suggestions?
Looks good, would This Fan go OK with it? Obviously i would need the 120mm fan clips for the heatsink aswell.
Cheers

The heatsink come with the clips. That fan would work but my god it would be loud!
Re: Heatsink - Quad Core - Any Suggestions?
I second the Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme. I found the Fan clips a bit fiddly but got there in the end.

I use the scythe ninja for most of my builds, it's a very good cooler. At stock settings it's quite happy passive but it comes with a decent fan to :)

just a bit of info if you go with the Thermalright
The inside of the fan's screw holes must be accessible

Some fans use a tube between the front and back of the fan and close off access to the screw holes

arrr the wonders of MS Paint.
Re: Heatsink - Quad Core - Any Suggestions?
I got Scythe S-FLEX 1600RPM Ultra Quiet 120mm Fan, which I am very pleased with.
Re: Heatsink - Quad Core - Any Suggestions?
I'd get the IFX-14 if you don't mind having a big heatsink on board.
It's £3 less than the TRUE and I read reviews and it does perform better than the TRUE. Plus it has a mini underside heatsink to dissipate heat from under the motherboard as well. Quite a whopper.
Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK
Or if you want a smaller sized heatsink then get the TRUE

or if you're strapped for cash get the TRU, it doesn't support socket AM2 but you can use it on it with an AM2 Bolt Thru Kit but it is £13 less than the TRUE.

The Extreme performs a few degrees C better than this one though, 1-2 idle and 3-5 under load iirc.

I have to admit i do like the look of that
Re: Heatsink - Quad Core - Any Suggestions?
Well yeah, that one is the daddy and can run passive even with an overclocked q6600 :)
The fan it comes with is awesome too, not to take anything away from the standard one though which is a great performer, just not quite up there with the Copper version.
Re: Heatsink - Quad Core - Any Suggestions?
thanks for all the responses, alot to choose from there. Basically i am running a 2.40 Q6600 which i am thinking about overclocking, anyone used any these sinks for similar sort of setup? what sort of speed could it safely be overclocked too with one of these?
Cheers

I use the Thermalright and I would expect you could pass 3.0GHz no problem.

Anandtech have tested the TRUE (Thermalright Ultra Extreme 120) with the Scythe Fan 1600RPM one to overclock their cpu (think it was an extreme edition dual core one though) to 3.9Ghz iirc. I'll go find the article. You can definately reach 3.4 with the right components (ram, mobo, decent cpu)
Re: Heatsink - Quad Core - Any Suggestions?
If you want Thermalright performance with a bit less cost than the TRUE then the Ultima 90 is the way forward out performs the TRU and is smaller to boot!
My money would be going to the following,
TRUE
Ultima 90
Scythe Ninja
Scythe Mine
and I probably wouldn't bother with the TRUE as it doesn't have enough performance benefits over the Ultima 90 or the Ninja to justify the extra money.
With regard to overclocking my E6550 running at 3.5GHz (500 FSB :)) is cooled perfectly well by my Ultima 90 under load doesn't push past 55 even in the current hot weather (running F@H and with the GPU client so my 3870 is pushing out a load of extra heat as well!).
