also is there a guide somewhere about how to overclock the Q6600 to over 3GHz? or shouldnt i need to?

edit: just put it through the calculator myself and got 441W with IDE HDD and 462W with SCSI HDD, which are mine? but when i added 20% aging, to simulate a years hard work, i got 530W and 554W, so should i get a 625W Enermax PRO82+ to allow for the aging?
If you are planning to overclock I'd recommend getting the PRO82+ to allow for more flexibility and upgradeability. The MODU82 would work fine for a few years anyway though. Enermax have 88% efficiency which means the PSU last much longer than older modules so you'd find that 20% ageing would be more or less 2 years for that PSU because of its outstanding quality components.

Your safe with which ever one you choose it just depends how much you'd like to spend. If you have the money then go for the 625W Enermax PRO82+ but its not a requirement just a precaution

    Re: what do you recon?

i am puting a new list of parts together at the moment, taking into account all of your advice, but i have a question...
the P35 motherboard i have chosen supports 1066MHz RAM so should i get 1066MHz RAM or stick with the 800MHz RAM i had chosen originaly? the price difference is from £70 for 4GB Corsair at 800MHz to £99 for 4GB Corsair at 1066MHz. would there be enough of a performance gain for that extra £30?
also the Q6600 CPU uses a FSB speed of 1066MHz so would 1066MHz RAM be easyer to set up?
    thanks

    Re: what do you recon?

It's not quite as simple as matching rated FSB's unfortunatly.

DDR2 has it's FSB multiplied by 2 and Core 2's have thier multplied by 4.

So the Q6600 is really only 266MHz and PC6400 is actually 400MHz.

So at stock settings on the RAM, you could run a Q6600 up to 3.6GHz

    Stick with PC6400

    Re: what do you recon?

Only worth getting anything higher than DDR800 if you are getting one of the newest and fastest chips (and mobos) really, although that always depends on price as you can run the RAM at a higher clock than the CPU (but difference IRL is minimal in most apps/games).

    Waste of cash tbh.

    2 x 8800GT = Around £200-£220

    1 x 8800GTS = £160 (i would rather have that)
    or
    1 x 9800GTX = just under £200 (also a better choice)

    crazy price.

i would just get one of these.

plz note i am a fan of gainward stuff.
1GB 8800GT = also a waste of cash. YOu would never utilise the 1gb with that card.

The sweet spot is still the 8800GTS 512mb. For around £150 you dont get better value vs great power. Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK (Its actually only £145 until Tuesday lunchtime on Toady Only).

or....£30 more get you the 9800GTX Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK
Its not really much of an improvement over the 8800GTS but if its a first time buy, rather than an upgrade, then £180 or less or very good value.

Tricky one. Given that they all pretty much use the same chip set families, logically you might think that the only difference is in layout, but then you come to the customised features in the bios, which makes it harder to compare.

Asus certainly were the one to go for, but I'm not sure that is true anymore... there have been one or two adverse comments about some of the P35 offerings. ABit seem to be recommended by overclockers (although the Asus offers overclocking features, if thats what floats your boat), and Gigabyte make great play on the build quality and the fact they use solid tantalum capacitors which they say leads to greater reliability.

Personally I think for general use there is little to choose, so I would buy on expansion capabilities and price. However you might want to look at teh mfrs web sites and check teh specs yourself, but remember they are hyping up their features so you nneed to read them with care.

I think on balance I would go for Asus or Gigabyte, but I would find it hard to justify that, and the Abit board will probably do just as well.

(And none of that really answers your question!!! - but I hope gives you some pointers)

    Re: what do you recon?

    Way i see it:
If i was buying a P35 i would steer clear from ASUS. The IP35's from ABIT are now very well respected as the best P35 chipset boards out there.
However, if i was buying an X38/X48 Chipset board today i would give ABIT a VERY VERY wide berth. The offering on the X38 (QuadGT) is a great board but the extras and the price were absolutely awful. ABIT skimped on just about everything possible and thats poor coming from a known enthusiast company. Couple that with the fact they have deserted the UK (despite what they tell you), i think Abit should be ashamed. I would get the budget stuff from them like the lower end IP35's but as for the higher end stuff---------NEVER again!

ASUS, as much as bad press they get, know how to give the customer better value for money on their high end offerings such as the Rampage Formula boards.

lol... You're right though choice basically comes down to personal preference. The reasons for my choice are more involved but they have no bearing for anyone else as they are tailored to me and only me due to statistics.

But when the question is asked I just give them my recomendations, they can make up there own mind from there

    Re: what do you recon?

If I were getting an X38/X48 board then DFI comes into consideration. Hell, Scan stock them now, so they must feel that the current boards are more reliable than the past. They've had some stonking reviews.

    Re: what do you recon?

one of the reasons i like the asus motherboard is that it has built in wifi, so i wouldnt have to buy a seperate wifi card which would take up space inside the case and cost more. but is the built in wifi on asus boards any good?

also what is the difference between a modular and an unmodular PSU?

    Re: what do you recon?

Modular PSU means you only have the cables in that you need - they're not fixed like a non-modular. Means a neater case and better airflow.

but with an unmodular you can just tape the unwanted cables to the side or bottom of the case, doesnt realy make a difference does it?
