    Laptop/Notebook Recommedations

Im looking at buying a laptop with fairly adequate storage space (around 60gb), and powerful enough for gaming (you'll see what kind of range im looking at by the laptops ive already shortlisted below). Im hoping you guys could help me out and Im also hoping this is the right forum to put such a thread in

Ideally it would be the Alienware 7700 but thats just a bit too much.

Similar spec machines I've seen for cheaper include the Rock Ti (uses the same chassis as Alienware) and the Rock XT (slightly less performance)

I then noticed the Dell XPS which was around £1600 and is probably the maximum Im looking to pay, im really enticed by it, except for the fact that it is a Dell

I also saw the Mesh Computers Ultima PCI-E which has a pretty decent spec for £1500 inc vat, but I know you guys dont rate the customer service of Mesh very highly, or so I've intepreted reading over some of the threads here

So any suggestions and comments welcome, along with links to good deals you might find

    Many thanks

    Tobeman

Edit; Wireless nic or centrino or w/e also required, I dont suppose that will be hard to achieve in laptops in this price range though

I have an Acer Travelmate 8006LMi
Simply put I am so glad I chose this laptop, absolutely fantastic. It can handle HL2 and far cry really well.

    I got it from www.acernotebooks.co.uk
The nice thing about these people is that you can pay an exra £45 for a guantee of NO DEAD PIXELS woot!

The new Travelmate 8100 looks really nice.

There are some really nice laptops here, the quality of mine feels really well built.

Ah, yes, that last TravelMate looks nice. (http://www.acernotebooks.co.uk/Acer_...aptop/prod.asp)

Nice RAM and giant HD for laptop, I was kinda hoping for 17" screen.

However I guess with a smaller screen the X700 could cope better because of smaller resolutions?

But yeah, I was looking for 17" screen where possible, but I will take that range into consideration

    Still looking guys

I've got a Sony Vaio (VGN S1XP) these are not made any more, theres an "improved" version, but its excellent, only a 13" screen (widescreen) but its the best display I've ever used.

I suggest you check out the Vaio's as well if you're looking fora good lappy, they ain't cheap tho, mine was £1700 last Nov

edit: VGN A317M £1500, nice looking lappy, 17" screen etc., but only a 128MB x600

don't pay over the odd for an alienware notebook as they are just rebranded Clevo laptops. ProStar and Sager are also resellers of Clevo so you'll find an identical laptop to the Area 51 for much cheaper.

Im a fan of Sony, especially their displays. *looks around room*

Sony 23" LCD TV, Sony Ericsson P900 Phone, Sony PS2, Sony DVD Player, Sony Alarm Clock Radio 28" Sony CRT TV downstairs too

I have seen their x-black displays before the contrast on them is really nice

Shame about the gfx card on that though

Thats not a laptop - its a very large house brick, and the build quality on those isn't great imo.

I have an Acer. I hate it. Badly made POS with awful customer support.

    Get a Sony:

I use a Sony Vaio A217M for work and the 17" XBlack screen is superb. It means it's fairly large but I need the space for different stuff. All told I've been very happy with it and the graphics (ATi 9700) aren't bad either for the odd game. I got it from Dabs but it seems to have been replaced by the A317M for about £1300 or so although it only has the X600 gpu.
