Since many of us have bought these drives I thought it would be a good idea to make a thread for discussion about them

Just got one of these for a friend and ran it through HD tach a couple of times and got some weird results...



How can the burst speed be so high?

Stupidly high volume of disk cache along with SATAII. Although over 300mb/s is a bit of a yarn, HDTach probably has a bug somewhere.

Personally I feel the HD Tach graph is quite useless (No offence)
My WD RE2-GPs are 5400RPM (I think) but STILL have >100MBps STR. Performance difference compared to my other drives are minimal.


I would be much more concerned about the reliability issue.

Is HD Tune any better for gauging performance? as for reliability, ive seen quite a few people mention returning their F1's for something else from another brand...

The `hdparm -tT` program for linux is a tad more reliable for raw throughput. It'll provide raw disk access results, as well as cached reads.

My guess would be that the second test still had data from the first in cache somewhere, probably in your system memory.

I've recently replaced by two ageing 74GB Raptors with the 1TB F1 Sammy. The result? A _much_ quiter and faster PC (not that it was particularly slow in the first place)! I've partitioned the Sammy into two 476GB (or thereabouts) partitions.

My Vista WEI score on the HDD is now firmly on 5.9 (the two Raptors only gave a score of 5.6). I know the WEI isn't a great benchmark but it's the one I use for Vista.

Replacing two noisy and hot drives has meant a slightly cooler system too. It's an absolute bargain at under £100.

No, but my point was, is it something that would flush the cache? Maybe you made yourself a coffee and snack, maybe you were looking at Hexus. This could have left the first test still in memory. You should always reboot on HDD tests to get a clean cache.

But haven't there been a number of issues with these drives? There are a lot of unhappy owners on Newegg.

Except that the average rating is 3 eggs. That means as many people are unhappy as are happy.
