I have had problems with Avast in the past. Also uGuru doesn't run 100% nicely on my Vista64 so I uninstalled it. Why don't you test with one running and not the other and work out which is the problem. Avast can be replaced by AVG which IMO is better anyway.
My guess is that your Cores are actually at 65-70C - Everest is reading the die temp, which under continuous stress should be no more than 5C LESS than the Core. Whatever you are using to read the Cores must have a wrong value for TJMax. That temp is hotter than it ought to be on stock with an aftermarket cooler. But it shouldn't be hot enough to cause failures.
It was a light hearted response to your comment about it being impossible to install a CPU incorrectly. I mentioned I'd seen some decent attempts. Not exactly lacking a logical progression of ideas now is it?
And yes, it doesn't help the OP, but wasn't intended to. Lighten up, if Hexus was designed to be a simple question/answer forum, it would be more like Microsoft's Knowledge Base. Not an exactly thrilling place to be then....
If you have an issue with a post on the forum, there is a grey box with a red exclamation mark in it, press that, give your reason why you felt it was inappropriate, and let the mods deal with it. You really have a lot to learn about the Hexus Forums.
And I didn't actually say check that the CPU was inserted correctly - I said that it was important to check if the orientation of the cooler with respect to the CPU mattered - and to make sure it was correct if does matter!

Well I have uninstalled AVASt anti viris and have not run uGuru anymore and I have had no more crashes.
Installed AVG, but must be wrong one as I only get it for 30 days, so ill get another version.
Although it may seem a bit strange, because of the high temps, I decided to overclock the FSB and adjust the RAM so it is not too fast too see what happened to the temps. So the CPU is 3gig now.....It runs a little hotter as expected, but not crashing in orthos, though cpu temp did reach 70 so I switched orthos off.
Idle it runs at same temp as before.
I will clock it back down until I sort the temps out. I will get some cleaner and take the heatsink off again, clean, re-apply arctic silver and try that.
Unfortunalety I cant seem to run Intel TAT under vista64.....
I gave the link to free AVG in another thread. Make sure you read the options when installing! Vista64 doesn't play nicely with several of these utils. You did try running as administrator?
Thanks Thorsson - I did try running as administrator....I have a few apps that are doing this, I assume they don't love the 64bit system, but I have something to try......
I will change my AVG as per your link......
I have now removed the HSF and cleaned with Isporopyl alcohol, lint free cloth and compressed air.
I have also cleaned the area on the CPU from any arctic silver in the same way.
Then applied Arctic Silver exactly as per the instructions on the website for a quad core.
Reseated all, taking great care that all pins were in correctly....(not as easy as it sounds).
On restart the temps are basically the same as before. 2 cores are still 10 degrees cooler than the other two. Running about :
40, 40, 30, 30 IDLE
64, 64, 54, 54 LOAD (Prime95) and slightly less for Orthos (stressing 2 cores)
Games and 3dmark run really well, in fact my CPU score in 3dmark is very good, but Prime95 (blend and small FFTs) and Orthos (blend) still force a restart (at those temps) after a short time.
RAM is fine and I am wondering if it is a voltage thing.. This happens whether the CPU is at stock, or at slightly higher than stock, with voltage increased etc.......
I feel I have tried everything now and just cannot get a stable system.
I am running no other programs except Core Temp, the chosen stress test and some system apps (minimal) and AVG. I dont do anything else whilst testing...except maybe have a cup of tea!
I am reluctant to go RMA route, but am out of ideas.
In case anyone is interested I *think* I may have found the problem.
The original hangs were because I could not run Orthos if uGuru, or Speedfan were running - one of them doesnt like Vista64, or each other....or just my system!
The heat and inability to run Prime/Orthos with an overclock.......
My CPU has a VID of 1.325, which (afaik) is the highest VID for a G0 stepping. This means that I have to put more CPU voltage through it to get any stable overclcok. I have to put minimum of 1.355 to increase FSB to 334 - giving a 3006mhz speed....any lower and Prime95 restarts after a few minutes.
Even at that voltage I have only tested for an hour and then switched off as it was running at core temps of 67,67,56,56.
More voltage = higher temps, so I can't overclock any further with this set up and keep at decent temps.
The other problem is that two cores are 11 degrees hotter than the other two - even after reseat with new application of paste. Now I am not sure, but I think this may mean that either the cpu, or HSF does not have an entirely flat face and the connection is not uniform.
Thanks everyone for their time and help, I will check back in case anyone has any comments/thoughts about my conclussion.
If I am correct with all the above, I am a little disapointed as I bought the hardware components as part of a bundle with the idea of clocking to 3.4, as suggested was rather "easy" in the guide etc....I know I should not have taken that as a given...!
And it does run quite nicely anyway!

I think that your analysis seems spot on. I found uGuru didn't play nicely with my Vista64 and completely uninstalled it. That is a very high VID, which is just unlucky. For such a variance in cores there has to be a suspicion that it's the CPU die at fault.
