i've been tracing the culprit for the high temp i am getting, and i was thinking... maybe reformatting my rig will help. does it? need your suggestions guys! don't want to waste my time reformatting if it doesn't change a thing.

lol... one question - is it better to fix the CPU with the HSF on the mobo before i fix the mobo to the case?

If there is a 'runaway' process (or malware) that is using up a lot of CPU time, that could cause high temperatures (check in the task manager). There several possible reasons for seeing high temps, including inaccuracies in the monitoring software. If you reboot the machine and go into the bios, the temperatures displayed there are probably a little more accurate.

If it really is overheating, you need to look at the airflow in the case and the cooler mounting. If you do reseat the CPU cooler, you need to clean off all the old compound and apply just a tiny smear of new heat sink compound. The idea is that it fills the microscopic voids in the two metal surfaces. There have been a LOT of threads about the best way to apply heat sink compound (and which is "best").

Isopropyl alcohol is fine for cleaning off the old compound, and IMHO any of the thermal compunds will do the job. No need to worry about which is the best out of "antarctic super gold extreme pro overclockers ultimate" or "millenium ultra ultimum performance platinum" at inflated prices, FWIW, I used arctic cooling MX1 last time I reseated a CPU - cos it was available and inexpensive - and it was fine.

(BTW - both names I used in quotes are fictitious and any resemblance to real products is purely accidental )

does all four pins make a clicking noise.
you should see arrows on the hsf do the opposite from what they arrows tell you,
it should just click in this way rather than pushing the pins in & turning them.

i just finished reseating again my CPU + HSF and the mobo. yup! it all goes with the "click" and it is perfectly fit. i posted here the temps i've got after reseating my system for the third time. are those temps ok now?

I really wouldn't start worrying unless you get up to the 70s! Some thermal compound 'beds in' as the processor thermally cycles, and temperatures can drop over a few days, but really, those temperatures aren't that high.

Task manager looks OK - although its a snapshot, it shows CPU loading at 2%, which is nothing.

Nevertheless I agree with soul-edge (miracles do happen!). There's far too much rubbish running on that PC. It won't be causing temp problems, but it is eating memory and will cause slow downs. I'll guarantee at least some of it is ad-ware, if not actively mal-.

I checked that and it didn't look too good. The free spycatcher that most people use is Spybot: The home of Spybot-S&D!

AV programs are not always good at detecting adware, especially the stuff that hides behind "handy" little utilities that you willingly install on your PC. I've known a couple of guys that installed so much of this crap that their systems had slowed to a crawl - and they thought they had a hardware problem.

BTW Norton is pretty bad mojo these days. Apart from being an indifferent AV at best, it often interferes with other programs. I won't even install the free copy you get with some motherboards.

If you have a properly set up router and AV and you don't do anything stupid you shouldn't expect spybot to catch anything except tracking cookies. However I recommend that you put cookie handling on manual in IE and don't use this feature in any malware product. I've had 2 problems in 10 years, and the worse one of those is because I clicked OK without reading properly.
