need help... still reaching 60-67 degrees temp!

hi there! i hope someone can suggest me something on how to reduce the heat on my rig. I already reseat the HSF and check it very carefuly with any damage that may occur or wrong placements but i am certain that it (HSF) is on its great condition and installation.

even with this facts, i am concerned about the temp i am getting. by the way i am using core2quad 2.4GHz G0 running with its stock fan, 800watts PSU ACbel, XFX GF 8800GT 512MB, 2GB kingston 800MHz and winxp pro 32bits OS. i know that even in stock fan, i shld. not get a temp that high.

what makes it worst, when i try to play CRYSIS... it freezes even in a medium settings!
i thought having a core2quad will give me a major boost but it is starting to disappoint me!
is it reli normal for quad to freeze if i open internet, one program (say... 3dsmax)?

i will certainly appreciate your suggestions and comments...

When i first got my rig, which is a Q6600 i used the stock HSF for the first few weeks, i didnt get temps like that and no freezing on Crysis neither, try a different HSF with some nice thermal compound on there! See what temps you get then and if the same i would see about RMA!

Also, a better HSF than stock will help as even a budget Arctic Cooling Freezer would do a fair job. (There are btter HSF at cost)

Also, is the CPU running at stock speed and volts? What is the default VID for your chip?

If so, perhaps try dropping the voltage/ clockspeed to see if it is that which is causing the problem. When it comes down to it, you may have a CPU with bad IHS contact and if this is causing instability an RMA could well be in order.

well, if there no changes within a couple of days i will get an after market cooling fan instead.
yup... the CPU is on its stock speed no overclocking on any hardwares coz' of the high temps.

can you explain further what is VID? RMA? and can now if i take a look at he bios my core voltage is 1.22, what is the safest voltage for to to turn it down?

RMA = Return Merchandise Authorization, or Return Material Authorization.

Basically... you contact whoever you bought the product from... tell them it's faulty, and they'll send you an RMA number

Yeah, try a new HSF they dont need to cost much! and a decent thermal compound isnt much either!

What is your ambient (i.e. your room) temperature? Does taking the side off the computer help?

thanks for the link Thorsson. my room's temp is 19 degrees celsius by the way. and i tried to open the side cover of my tower case but it didn't help either. any suggestions?

Well it's not your ambient, and the case isn't adversely affecting things either. Your VID looks nice and low. That only leaves two things I can think of:

1. Your motherboard is over-volting the CPU. Go into the BIOS and take it off Auto and put it at 1.225v (the VID figure).

2. If it's not that the only thing left is the HSF. Can you check what rpm the fan is running at under load (Orthos)? Quite a few utilities will do this - probably one came with your motherboard. Also check what it's doing at idle.

Seems unlikely that this is the fault as I would expect higher temps than this, but worth a check, because the only thing that's left (that I can think of) is the seating of the HSF. What thermal paste did you use? How did you put it on? Can you post a picture?

I never used the stock fan, but I don't think 62 under Orthos is that much higher than could be expected (5C? but I bow to anyone who uses stock's superior knowledge). It certainly shouldn't be causing Crysis to freeze at that temp. I've had mine running for hours at 72 under test.

Crysis freeze is more likely to come from RAM or GPU in my opinion. Could be worth checking the GPU temp and running memtest on your RAM.

From the screen shot you are only reaching 63C while orthos is running and it is down to 44C at idle(when the PC isn't doing anything). Those temps aren't alarming to me.

As Thorsson suggested maybe run MemTest: RAM reliability tester for Windows to see if you memory isn't faulty and also check your GPU temperature with nTune or RivaTuner.

nope, it doesn't. all components are in great shape. and i am beginning to think that the software (TAT) is giving inaccurate values. it's ok for me, what bothers me is some of the programs are freezing like (crysis & 3dsmax) worst when i open 3 programs simultaneously... it responds not that CORE2QUAD level performance... hope you know what i mean... it freeze and hang...

Regarding CPU you can see from Real Temp that it's taking the TJMax as 95C. These *can* vary from time to time, but I know the author has taken great pains to get these right. They can be manually adjusted.

If yours is 85C then the reading would actually be 52C rather than 62. What's the die temp (Gigabyte must have a tool that measures this)? That should be around 5C less than the core if you leave Orthos running for a while.

Edit: Notice that TAT is actually oscillating between 2 values. Also to get the effect of load on your GFX card you need to run a GFX benchmark like 3dmark.

tnx for the response. 3 programs (photoshop CS3, 3dsmax9 (modeling) and autocad2004). these 3 programs run smoothly on my previous OC core2duo 3GHz setup.

my OS is WinXP Pro 2002 32bits.

how can we adjust the TJmax via realtemp?

I haven't tried benchmarking my card... but i noticed that it becomes too noisy when i tried to play crysis. lastly, for the die temp... don't have any idea for now... i'll check the drivers that came along with the mobo (gigabyte) and hoping to see the tool for that. thanks for the info's man!
