Psu?

hi all

jus need advise...my mate is looking to get a new psu...he seems to think he needs at least 600w and im almost certain he will not need any more than 500w.

this is his system:

Intel C2D E8200 @ 3.0Ghz
3 Hdds
2 DVD/RW
3 Fans
2GB 800mhz RAM (2 x 1GB)
ATI PowerColor 3850 512MB GPU
Creative SB Audigy 4

Going into a Sharkoon case (Rebel 9 i think)

Also which PSU's would be recommended?

anything by Corsair/Seasonic/Enermax

i would reccomend a corsair HX520w, as you are correct in thinking it will not need more than 500w (in fact it will probably only draw about 300w full load but it is best to have headroom for upgrades) and corsair are a reputable brand and the PSU's have a lengthy warranty and it is modular, but if he is insistant that he 'needs' more then a HX620w will satisfy him, it will also power any upgrades that he may have in the forseable future (but so will the HX520w)

The Corsairs get good comments, no doubt for very good reason. But one thing that is said is that the modular plugs don't stand up to too much abuse.

Another way of looking at it is something like the Seasonic 500w S12-II. It isn't modular - which has advantages and disadvantages. The advantage is you don't have to worry about modular plugs breaking, but the disadvantage is that you can't ease air flow by not installing cables you won't use.

Your mate, however, has his machine fairly well-loaded, so I'm not sure how much difference that will make, in practice. He'll need most of the connectors.

And that Seasonic has two more advantages :-

1) It's in stock at Scan, which the HX520 currently isn't.
2) It's about £13 cheaper.


Oh, and as Corsair use Seasonic internals in the HX series, IIRC ...... well, suffice to say Seasonic are a reputable brand too.

saracen rightly said that the corsair HX series are seasonics in disguise, they were made by seasonic and seasonic are very good, enermax are also becoming very very reputable.

but you'll have made the right choice if you stick within those manufacturers

I have the s12 II 500. It's an excellent psu and of course being a seasonic very quiet. When I bought it it was a toss up between the s12 and a hx520. If figured the hx wasn't worth the extra money and was a little concerned about corsair's rma service being to the usa.
