It's not so much that I hate it, it just reminds me of Kerio 2.x, which was probably the best firewall ever made for Windows, and it got butchered thereafter.

    Yes

I am currently using AVG 8, this comes with its own antispyware but i prefer to disable that part of it and use "spybot search and destroy" for anti-spyware. Personally i find it to be adequate, especially since its FREE , it is quite simple to use and i dont seem to have a virus infested computer (performance hit wise), but then again if it doesn't pick it up who knows

I would do what was suggested, but instead of not completely installing it just install them as normal, route the cables to their sockets etc but just dont plug them in and then when everything is all set up just open the case, plug them in and your done with no extra hassle except maybe 1 minute more time.

You seem to be confused, creating a partition and partitioning a hard drive is ever so slightly different. A hard drive requires a partition to be created to install the OS or any information on it (can be the whole size of the disk), so there is always a partition on a hard drive. PartitionING is usually refered to by most in the meaning of creating more than one partition on the hard drive instead of just one giant one which takes all the space (although thanks to the joys of the english language it also technically means just creating the single partition). 3 Hard drives will work seperately from each other in the standard set up (with their single partition ), you will have your one with the OS installed to it (it can still store information and programs its just a little bit special in having the OS on it), one with your music and the other with work etc. All you are doing is literally treating the hard drives as giant folders, simple as that. The seperation of the data is just by your organising of it.

    Hope tht helps

Re: what happens when you turn on a computer you built yourself for the 1st time?

AVG is good but I prefer Avast. (google it )
How long have you had spybot - search and destroy n your laptop? you might want to download the latest version and/or the one which supports the operating system you're going to be using on your new computer

avast! talks to you when you get a virus or it updates if you dont turn vpoices off (i like them personally, there quite a musing )

to scan, just right click the icon, select start avast antivirus, then on the silver part, press the play button

yeh, just go on the avast site, go to avast 4 home and at the top click register (its free) it's valid for 1 year, and then you just re-register...

edit: ive found it for you: HERE just punch your stuff in (i normally put semi bogus stuff, cept email (cos you need that for the code))

Re: what happens when you turn on a computer you built yourself for the 1st time?

I found that Avast was much more of a resource hog than AVG. It also interferred more than AVG. And the last reviews I saw had AVG performing quite a bit better.
