Crazy temps after heatsink "upgrade"
Upgraded my Zalman chipset cooler:

to this thermal right:

and my temps at idle are now:

As a reference, my load were 39C mobo (maximum, it was usually 37C when the window was open), and 46-44C cores with the zalman. The cores used to idle at 30C!!
What's has happened? The case door has been left open too...
I had to take the whole PC apart and the mobo out of the case to put that heatsink on. The heatsink is very hot to touch. Also I switched the 1300rpm scythe fan cpu with the 1000rpm sharkoon fan case fan. I wanted the case/mobo temps to go down...
Has the thermalright disrupted the airflow?
I think I am going to get a new case... and see what happens...
Re: Crazy temps after heatsink "upgrade"
D'oh... found out that one of my fans was blowing the wrong way... temps are lower now, but are still higher than before... 41C mobo temp... anyone know why?
Re: Crazy temps after heatsink "upgrade"
Just wait for the AS5 (or whatever you use) to settle.
Or you haven't screwed it in hard enough.
And I believe some heatpipe don't work well at low temperature?

The heatpipe is very hot! I can't touch it for more than a second... I think I need to put a fan onto it... or get a case with better airflow
Re: Crazy temps after heatsink "upgrade"
the stock heatsink on my asus p5n-d burns me in about a second, took it off auto voltage and i hope it is less(comp is a bit hard to get to now :P). Id say shove a fan on it as mine gets very hot unless i add a 60mm fan which is incredibly noisey(so tookm it off). My motherboard is reported as 38c idle, no fan etc so i guess that heatsink is on wrongly or just crap? since mines only the basic one :P.
If you got spare paste left perhaps try and reseat it.
Re: Crazy temps after heatsink "upgrade"
Well the problem is that it is meant to be mounted vertically on the board.... I didn't know this, I thought it could be mounted horizontally when I bought it... I only have room to mount is horizontally, which doesn't fit perfectly. I got it to fit, and it is taking the working as it is getting hot! If there was bad contact it wouldn't be getting this hot.
Another possible problem could be that the intake fan sucks over the hard drives before the air gets to the mobo. So warm air is being blown onto the heatsink. This is a problem with the case, but I have bought a faster 120mm fan (2000rpm sharkoon), and I will give that a go to see if it helps.

Re: Crazy temps after heatsink "upgrade"
could well be the weather.... my idle temps cary a lot depending on how hot it is. normally its around 36-38. but recently because my room is warmer than before i'm lucky if its below 40 idle.
Re: Crazy temps after heatsink "upgrade"
Could well be the weather, I've seen my siblings machine's CPU idle temps go from 21°C to 26°C in the last couple of weeks or so, well since the weathers got warmer. :)
By the way, what thermal paste did you use, MX-1/2, AS5?

Re: Crazy temps after heatsink "upgrade"
it does take a few thermal cycles for the TIM to cure, and then you will get a more accurate measure of temps.
Re: Crazy temps after heatsink "upgrade"
Don't know where you are SiM, but the temps where I am have been warmer the last few nights (had to leave the window open all night with the fan on, really humid! :()
If its the same there, it certainly will have an impact on temps.
Re: Crazy temps after heatsink "upgrade"
Yeah it's really sticky and hot here too, just checked and my temps are up by 5-6c from last week when I installed this mobo.
Re: Crazy temps after heatsink "upgrade"
It's cold where I am :(
I miss those 5 hot sunny days at the start of summer.

Re: Crazy temps after heatsink "upgrade"
Mobo and gpu hit 47C and 71C respectively whilst running ATI tool!!!!
This is with the case door off too!!!! and the window is blowing cool air in to room and is right next to the pc!!
There no way this pc will be stable if I had the door on...
