No Keyboard during start up!
Hi all, I haven’t been on these forums in a while, since I have been without a PC for ages! Anyway I have a problem with a virus infested XP machine! I intend to wipe the whole thing and install a fresh copy of XP but this is proving very difficult. After the POST I am unable to 'press any key' to enable the setup.exe on the CD drive (BIOS Beeps are normal). I am however (intermittently) able to get into the BIOS via the Delete key, I have checked the settings but nothing stands out and all looks fine. I have tried loading optimal settings and performance settings but this makes no difference. Hears where it gets a little weird :O_o1: When the PC boots up to Windows the keyboard works - so with that logic I tried to start the XP install form 'My Computer' but it wont go ahead with the install as the version of Windows currently installed is newer than what is on the CD ROM.
The only (possible) solution I have at the moment is to pop the HDD into another PC and format the drive from there, but I have no guarantee that when the HDD is put back into the original PC to install XP, I wont get the same keyboard problem.
PS - I have tried both USB and PS2 keyboards with no avail.
Any help here would be much, much appreciated!!
Thank you
Re: No Keyboard during start up!
You cant install windows from within windows. Are you using a SATA CD/DVD drive? I've had a few boards that just refuse to boot from SATA CD drives for some reason.
An old IDE drive worked fine.
If this isn't the case what motherboard do you have? It's most likely it's a problem with the board someone else has found a work around, well very likely seeing as windows was installed at least once before.
Re: No Keyboard during start up!
legacy usb keyboard drivers - enable them in bios..
with the ps2 keyboard, either its faulty or you are plugging it in the ps2 mouse port, because it should work without enabling/disabling anything in bios... unless you've got a usb/ps2 adaptor plugged in, then some keyboards don't work on them.
and you have altered the boot sequence to have CD/DVD first haven't you?
Re: No Keyboard during start up!
If he's getting the 'Press any key to enter window setup' prompt, which from his post sounds like he is, then he is booting from the CD fine.
Was the PS2 keyboard you tried a native PS2 (rather than using a USB > PS2 converter) and tested in another PC to be working?
If you've got a DOS bot disk, you could try booting from that and running setup from the command prompt.
Re: No Keyboard during start up!
Ha Ha no the keyboard isn’t plugged into the mouse port. I have a native PS2 keyboard and a native USB keyboard, both only work in Windows. I cannot identify the motherboard - its red so it could be and MSI  The only numbers on it are EA=000AE624DBE5 (I have no idea what this is) It's a Duron motherboard probably made around 1999. As far as Legacy drivers - I don't remember seeing that in the BIOS.

Yes I am aware of that but it does start the process and usually auto-boots to set-up.
