It will all work together yeah.

You may want to hold off on the expensive gfx card though, the new one's (ATi and Nvidia) are out in the next week or two and are supposed be considerably better.

    Re: Last Minute Spec Check

I think they will be too expensive for me and im not a really advanced gamer so it should be ok for games now. If I do want the new cards I may use the EVGA step-up program

    Re: Last Minute Spec Check

Not heard of anyone having a good expierence with the step up program lol

The ATi card will be in that price range

If you are not a hardcore gamer what other uses will the PC have? The Q6600 makes more sense for system flexability if it's not just for gaming.

    Re: Last Minute Spec Check

i also suggest waiting too, apparently the ati range will be around that price and be around on par with the 9800gx2 or so i've heard.

you haven't listed an OS..... only other thing is get 4gb of ram, its so cheap nowadays it'd be rude not too

Mainly just office and a few photo-editing applications now and again. Apparently the E8400 is better with most of the applications I use that are dual-threaded, few of them are quad-threaded and for games

For future-proofing is it well worth going for the q6600 in terms of gaming?

I will be using XP Home 32-bit as I already have an OEM version, so I don't think it is worth getting 4gb now?

    Re: Last Minute Spec Check

The q6600 is a great performer in games even with the defficit in raw power. You will not really struggle to get similar performance to the E8400 in games and you could also overclock the Q6600 to 3.0GHz really quire easily.

Photo editting will no doubt love the extra cores and 4GB of RAM might be nice to

Depends how long your future is, about 1-1.5 years probably not but any longer it would seem the better choice really, especially considering its only about £5 more and if you bought a decent cooler for about £30 you could make up the clock speed very easily.

    Re: Last Minute Spec Check

Does XP take advantage of all four cores?

Do any games at the moment utilise four cores in game?

Do you think the E8400 will give me better performance in game with the 9800gtx over the q6600?

    Re: Last Minute Spec Check

I have decided to go with this cpu (quad) because of the below quote from someone who benchmarked the two cpu's. Because gameplay will be similar in the range of 1-5fps (crysis) I see it better to go for the quad core. Because future applications will be quad threaded and games.

One thing I did conclude though is that the quad is neck and neck with the dual in games even though the dual is clocked much higher. Based on my findings, I would say that people would be better off going with the Q6600 than the E8400 for its multitasking abilities and potential for multi core optimized apps in the future. Plus games have really hit their bottleneck with GPUs, so any high end processor is going to be sufficient for games as long as you have a good graphics card.

Will there be any difference between the E8400 being 45nm and the q6600 being 65nm (kentsfield) ?

Use a bit more power but are safer to overclock with

    Both fine compatability wise.

the q6600 is a better all rounder, although the e8400 when overclocked will beat it in games, since you said you won't be gaming the q6600 would be better. the photo editing applications will still benefit using 2 cores of the quad, they don't have to use all 4 at once
I'll go find some real life benchmarks to see what the differences are.

    Overclocking Benchmark Results - Tom's Hardware : Overclocking Intel's Wolfdale E8000

You can see in those results the Q6600 at stock speeds is the same or even better at times (multi-threaded apps) than the E8xxx cpu which is overclocked to 4ghz+
